Weighing in at 7lb 5 1/4oz we have flywheel number 15 weighed and ready to go under the knife.


Full weight reduction was requested.
The flywheel weight will be reduced to 10.5mm wide x 142mm or so.. should come in at 6lb and some change....

I did one that far, but have not let it out of my hands yet...
Cutting that much in to the weight AND cutting the basket is a big unknown.... it is not a recommended MOD by any of the guys that were doing this for race bikes back in the day...
My way of thinking is/.... The Roger Ditchfield's and like, did not stop cutting on the flywheels when they reached the level of materiel removal they did for lack of a machine capability or skill... they choose to not cut on the basket, and they choose not to cut the weight as you see in that attached pic above....

Not knowing why, I prefer to stick with a cut and weight reduction that is tried and true... at least on flywheels I send out the door for others.

I will install my light one on my own bike this summer and see if it holds up.

 

Wow, that is extreme. I wonder how that works... Cutting into the basket that much is not damaging the magnets?

I also do not know if vibration and flex in use will cause a failure of the materiel when cut like that

From the pic I can not tell if the cuts have a radius so the issue of stress risers are also something to consider.
Any time a cutter is used like we are doing, micro cracks happen in the materiel to a depth approximately 1/2 as deep as the last cut.

It may be just fine the way it was done..... likely is. And while I'm willing to find out myself on my bike... Im not wiling to do that kind of a MOD and give the part to someone else to find out.

for a reduction of 1lb 2 1/2oz

The basket on this one was slightly out of round, so I took a .002 skim cut then polished it some to true it up and reduce the stress risers from cutting.

And its all mine - hell yeah! Cant wait to install this and all the other mods going on in my garage right now.

 

Pffffft, it was her idea.

She rides, she can wrench, she has her own street and dirt bike.
