Factory pro Shift Kit

Well, along with the suspension and cams, I got a Factory Pro shift kit.

(since I will undoubtedly miss a step, follow the manufacturers and parts kit directions)

Fairing off, drain radiator coolant, remove water pump and clutch cover. The string on the right is to pull the pulse gen cable back through to the other side where it hooks up.

I put the cover bolts in a box to keep track of which one goes where

Take out 5 bolts/springs and outer plate along with clutch rod and the little piece.

This is the dimple that you have to take out of the nut, its a PITA. BEFORE taking off basket, you must put something into the small gear on the right. It is a spring loaded split gear.

I used a punch to hold the split gears from twisting off. I also have already pulled off the shifter shaft and you can see the star wheel and detent mechanism.

It was a pain to get the new star aligned with the locating pin as the shaft can move in and out a bit. I didnt get pics of putting them on,. The detent arm is pretty straightforward. Below is the new star/detentarm/spring on with the shifter rod back in place

After this its put the clutch basket back on, remembering where thrust washers go etc,, then the inner basket. I used my impact wrench to put the big nut back on. It ended up exactly where the dimple on the nut aligned with the keyway.

Did I just go on to the next step? No, I had to be **** and put the torque wrench to check for 94ftlbs even though the impact wrench had got it to where it was origaially. Was there another 1 complete rotation on that nut? No, I had to check it anyway. So i juryrigged a holder of sorts to hold the basket whilst I checked the torque. As you can now imagine, just as I hit 90+ ft lbs, one of the 5 posts of the inner basket went... TWANG and clattered to the floor. Needless to say, I was quite irritated with myself.

Inner basket = $80
overnight shipping = $40
I should have not messed with it in the first place = priceless

At least it will be here tomorrow, so I can get it together wed, as I have track days this weekend.

Nice write up! I have wanted to do this mod and have read others who posted positive results but I had no idea it was so deep. Guess it would be a good time to replace my right cover. Mine got scratched (PO) and it's always bugged me.

I put just the new Factory detent arm in mine and it was a bit of a job... let us know how it acts with the new shift star as well. I had a problem getting the black gear with the ignition advancer in just right and ended up with a noise and had to take it all apart again to get it right.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but...

I am in the middle of doing the shift kit and am a bit perplexed. Factory Pro instructions say to remove the sidestand, shifter, clutch activation houseing, counter shaft sprocket cover and sprocket, and none of which I have seen the point of doing. It says nothing about removing the clutch, which seems to be a mandatory step. WTF!

I am currently stuck trying to get the dimpled nut off, and can't seem to get it. SO I either make the tool, or enlist the help of an assistant (my dad comes to mind), and possible seize the opportunity to purchase an impact drill.

Anybody have anything to say about Factory Pros seemingly grossly inaccurate instructions or removing the NUT; by all means share your knowledge!

For the shift improver arm kit I installed the instructions weren't bad. My 1/2" drive air impact and the correct size socket made short work of the dimpled nut for the clutch basket if thats the one you are referring to.

You are correct. I borrowed the 1/2" impact wrench from my dad, and it made short work of said situation. That doesn't take away from the fact that the instructions say you have to remove the side stand but nothing about the clutch. Thanks to this post I got the picture better.

I would like to tell you all about something that...SUCKS ***!

I was putting my clutch back together after spending hours cleaning what is probably the original gasket off of the LH case cover. I only cut my knuckles once or twice. 9.5 ft lbs isn't a whole lot of torque, and maybe my torque wrench isn't so accurate at that level, but busted not 1 but 2 of the clutch spring bolts off! WTF, its not like I was railing on them.

Pick up one of these, those big torque wrenches are useless below 16 lbs.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...temnumber=2696

9.5ft lbs * 12 equals 114 inch Lbs

This Torque wrench range goes up to 16.66ft lbs

Funny you should mention. That is the one I have, but I have its big brother! I was cursing it-"YOu stupid c*&K suc&(*&g, Mother F*&^*&ng, piece of ^#$@! Harbor Freight Torque Wrench..." because I have this thing about Harbor Freight tools. My rule is not to buy anything there with more than 2 moving parts, or anything that is "calibrated". But second thought, I was just pushing the LOWER limit of the tool. I may pick one of those up, or I may go shopping at my dad's place. Either weight, I need an easy out, new bolts (anyone know why Ron Ayers lists 4 different number 19 for that bolt and 2 of them cost more than the other 2?), a week or two delay. That will give me time to locate the necessary tools to complete the job. Its ok though since I still have painting to do, Clip-ons to acquire, front end to complete, etc.
