cutting down a seat
my wife has a Yamaha YZF600R ( I know, I know ) and even with rear lowering links and short fork springs and the fork raised in the clamps till it barely has any ground clearance she wants it a little lower. any info on thinning the seat foam would be appreciated.

I've done it with an electric carving knife. I pulled all the staples and took the cover off, and then carved the foam down a little at a time until I was happy. Then I used canvas streching pliers and an electric staple gun to put it all back together. It made a mess and took an afternoon, but if you take your time it's really not very hard.

remove the cover by pulling out the staples with a flat blade screwdriver.
I don't cut down seats for a lower surface but I do use an electric carving knife.
I then replace the foam with sargent's atomic foam. MUCH cheaper than the real thing with about 60% of the same comfort. Use upholstery batting to smooth out.
First pic is the stock foam that was remove via an electric carving knife.
Second pic is the sargent foam being formed and placed back in. Use knife and sand paper to get a close fit.
Next I covered it with some cotton batting source from walmart's fabric section to smooth everything out. Pic was taken before trimming but leave enough to pull tight underneath to staple along with the cover.
Close with a heavy duty stapler while pulling the seat cover firm. This is my VFR seat but it's the same for the VTR.
Note: I let the seat sit out in the sun and getting the last wrinkles out was MUCH easier. Probably could use a hair dryer too. You need a staple GUN not a desktop paper stapler (LOL).
