Bafflectomy!!!!

Bafflectomy!!!!
Greg should add some of this to his site.
I used a 2 1/8" hole saw from ace hardware they make one for metal, it was about $15 and was just long enough. I found that if you would wiggle the pipe back and forth a while you wouldn't have to hit it as hard.
Then I used a rounded file to smooth the interior edges, nest step is optional. I sprayed black high temp engine coat in the exhaust, give it a long time before you start it though. But by doing that i was able to make the inside not appear as much through the hole.
I like the way it looks and sounds. The sound is perfect, now i can be heard. Anyone who is thinking about doing this should go ahead an do it.

I just did that to mine as well. The drilling wasn't too hard, but gettiing the damn baffle broken and freeing it up to remove it was too much work. I wiggled, hit it, wiggled, hit it... I was like "why does everyone make this sound so simple, when in fact there is this much work involved in getting it free to remove it?"
But, after all said and done, I like the sound too. It has a nice rumble on it, very much like an aftermarket pipe.
After a day of riding (280 miles or so) though, I was starting to get a headache. This is the first time I have loud pipes on the bike (all previous bikes stock sounding).
I do have a pair of stock exhausts that I bought off of ebay, and if I don't get used to the sound, I will just swap them back to stock.

good luck!! I did the de-baffling on mine as well but I also drilled the next baffle about 14" inside the pipe as well..Now that's loud!!! but it sounds better than just the end baffle cut IMHO. The volume was starting to get kinda old so I had a machine shop make me some baffles to insert into the end. It made it prolly 50-60% quieter but after about 100 miles or so I found myself missing that great V-Twin sound. So I took them out and I just live witht the loud pipes. I plan on getting a good set of Jardins or something and I know those will be quieter than mine. A friend of mine had an rc51 with a set of Erion pipes and my de-baffled pipes were prolly 10-15% louder than his! O'well. I find that once you ridden a v-twin with a set of good pipes, stock pipes just sound so wimpy

Man, I have a baffelectomy+ too! I have my end baffles removed completely, but I also punched some good size holes in the perforated screen further back in there. It does sound better.I don't know why mufflers are so friggin expensive for what they are. It's ridiculous.

Re: Bafflectomy!!!!
Hi !
My VTR (french model) has a very quiet stock exhaust ...
How would be the sound if I drill two, four or eight holes on each cans ?
Louder ? Deeper ? How much ?
Would it be difficult to "refilled" the holes after the mod if I can't live with it ?
I was using MIG carbon cans but the police was not really cool with me.... about 102 dB.....
I have listen to mp3/waves files but it's difficult to have a good idea.... and was the sound recordings made in the same conditions ?
Thanx !

Do you still have those stock de-baffled pipes? You know me from SpeedZilla's forum. I'm in Utah. I want to see how they sound if you still have them I'll take them. Send me a e-mail to trento@fairbankscapital.com
Thanks

Re: Bafflectomy!!!!
You had to blow off a track day....WOW you have been busy!
Wow you think shipping is going to be $50.00 to SLC? Not that I think that is a bad price or anything
What kind of shape are they in? Are you going to have a change to take pics? And the final question PAYPAL?
here is my e-mail addy if you want to get this done over e-mail:

Hey Reynolds! Glad to have you here!
It won't hurt your mileage unless you do roll-ons continuously to hear the freed-up v-twin breathe...
It won't give you any better mileage, IMHO, related to the Jardine's I put on.
Pretty much the same.
Another 'Hawk lives in the same town as me! Beg for mercy, car alarms!

Just did my baffelectomy on my 05 on my lunch break yesterday... man what an improvement, now thats the reason i bout the shawk!!! dont know if its in my head of not but does seem to be running a little warmer

I noticed mine runs hotter also after the bafflectomy. I would assume that it is just running leaner. I'm going to keep an eye on it, and if it gets worse, I'll rejet. I don't have any stumbles in the powerband though.

Have you also blocked the PAIR?
I'm going to do the bafflectomy soon, but have blocked the PAIRs and removed the other "extra weight".
HUGE DIFFERENCE!
My commute this week was without my toasty ankles.
I'll let you know if it runs hotter or any change post -ectomy.

I'll have pics up soon.
Having a couple of issues after the Bafflectomy, but could be due to the other mod.
If I don't let the bike warm up to 130-150* (I'm still playing with the numbers) The bike will bog down and shut off on me. After restart, it seems to need some time to sit before starting back up, then it will run just fine....all the way home.

Don't think the two issues are related. I drilled the max amount of holes in mine over a 6 mo period and then took the center out altogether, leaving the inside baffles in tact. No change in heating. Sound is great, not too loud, runs great(note: i wear earplugs religiously as i did with OEM pipes). Look at my mods below and you can see what my set-up is. Maybe your thermostat is stuck closed, fans quit working, low antifreeze, low oil. What do the pipes look like in terms of color_black= too rich, brown=OK, light grey=lean. Check plugs for color too. look around and see what you can find and let us know.
