Hi there guys i am new to this site and looing for help!!

I am building an off road buggy with a VTR 1000 firestorm in it
( 02 model ) and i want to do a pod set up on it instead of useing the
orginal air box, can it be?? will i loose power if dont use the orginal air box?? or if theres any other mods i can do to get a bit more power out of it without spending thousands on it! cheers Mick

Messing with the airbox on our bikes has been a very hit or miss prospect. Most people give up after a while and go back to stock. There is improvement to be had from longer intake runners, free flowing filters, and a jet kit.. But even with those minor mods, some have given up on K&N filters because they can get more power out of the stock one etc. etc.

That isn't to say that you can't make it run right without the airbox.. but you might give up some power doing so.

 

I've not read of anyone being totally happy and getting more power w/ a normally aspirated motor using a significantly altered (ie. NON-airbox style) induction suite...

 

From everything I've read, messing with the airbox or going to individual filters is a waste of time and money, results in less power. 25 years ago you could take a Jap bike engine, spend $300 on a full exhaust system, K&N, main jets, leave the air box lid off and pick up 15%-20% more H.P. With today's high volume air boxes, those days are long gone.

 

on cv type carbs the airbox is a vital piece in how the slides want to behave. That is why it "can be done" but is a head ache getting it to work right. Honda engineers designed the airbox to work with the carbs. There is always more than one way to skin a cat but I doubt on your budget you will have the kinda tech and engineering tools that honda had availible to them when they developed the air box for our motors.

Also with pods even if you some how get it to jet right pods are very finicky to turbulence which I assume a buggy will have alot of. Have fun try it but I wouldn't spend any money on airbox mods.

I would too. Unless you are really keen, and then I would suggest a carb swap to some flat slides. But that will not be a cheap exercise.
