954 calipers only, will it works ?

Hi,
Lots of posts about upgrading brakes.... but,
I'm looking for a better initial bite of braking power and more brake power without too much effort on the lever : one finger braking power...

I've SS lines, EBC HH pads, stock calipers, stock MC.

Upgrading to 954 calipers would help ?
Would I absolutely need a larger MC ?

954 calipers will not bolt on to Superhawk forks. The master cylinder is a better upgrade along with good pads and lines.

You can upgrade the system with any 929,954 or rc51 calipers and master cylinder. You will have to mill out some material from the calipers to make them fit the Super Hawk forks. At the very least change the master cylinder.

So, looks like I should first upgrade to another MC.
Which is the best MC size to use with stock calipers ?
16mm, 17mm, 19mm ?
MC CBR929, CBR954 ?

thanks ;-)

Get the one that matches the calipers you choose. For instance, early rc's used a 19mm m/c and later ones used an 17.5.

I have complete front rc brakes. Its a great mod.

I have mounted a RC master cylinder on mine (not sure about the year but think it is a 2003). That, along with braided steel lines and EBC HH pads makes for a wonderful front brake system. I would imagine that RC calipers would likely be another step up but I am quite happy with the set-up I have now, it does everything I need it to do.

cheers

SlowHAWK is an unknown quantity at this point
I have a RC-51 setup on my Hawk.... I like it, definitley bite harder with less lever effort. Here's a link with a bunch on the pics I posted.... I've heard the 929/954/F4i calipers will need the same work done to them...

https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...ystem+Overhaul

If the link doesn't work, do a search for Brake System Overhaul.... you'll find it.

What I don't understand is how the RC/929/954 calipers are all that much different than the stock VTR calipers. They don't look much different and they are still 4 piston. Are the pistons different sizes? I think the M/C alone made a huge amount of difference, at least as much as the pad change. Lines will give you "feel". The M/C gives you less travel, increased lever firmness, but less feel (made up for by lines). The pad change gives the increased braking power.

Here is part of the answer

No.... the RC/929/954 pads are larger and have 2 pins at each end holding them in place within the caliper.... if you look at the comparison photo, you'll see the Hawk pads are held in by 1 pin located in the center, and are smaller as well.
Taken from another thread.
Add in some differences in piston size, designed in stiffness of the newer caliper. or just the internal differences.

Brake Teck and GP Teck both offer master cylinders along with calipers and pads. But it's cheaper to get one off ebay.

good luck

The RC calipers while looking simliar in size, have larger pistons internally.... and as stated the pads are also larger (have more surface area) as well.

Next to each other, they don't really look similar in size or construction. They are clearly superior. It's not even subtle.

And they're smaller and lighter. It's a win/win all around.
