2 into 1 exhaust mod
2 into 1 exhaust mod
I wanted a 2 into 1 and looked at some of the other superhawk exhaust photos and decided I wanted a high mount.I purchased a micron high mount for a 00 r1 off ebay. I cut my exhaust at the collector and installed a 1999 vfr 800 exhaust gasket,it fit perfectly. The mid pipe did not have the exact bend I wanted so I found on ebay a polished 2-1/4" stainless 45 degree elbow. and trimmed the midpipe and elbow to length.took both pipes to a muffler shop that had a hydraulic pipe expander and had the midpipe expanded to accept the elbow.Took them back home made a few alignment marks and had them tig welded.I also trimmed 6" off the can.It runs great and sounds great also.
I did practically the same thing a few years back (though with a Blue Flame slip-on and link pipe for a 98-99 R1; believe pics are still up in gallery section). The bike ran decently though I noticed a dip in teh mid-range, something confirmed by teh dyn (between 4,800-6,500 rpm). Peak power was virtually unchanged although peak torque was down slightly.
3 wrong things combined does not make one right... K&N filter = wrong, combining Factory Pro and Dynojet jet kits = wrong... Add a 2-1 header, and you get a friggin headache...
man i really didnt want to do that lol the guy who had it before me set the bike up when i had pulled it down the carbs had a 178 factory pro main and 180 rear but what was odd is he had the the slides with 3 lift holes insted of two and the slide springs where cut in half on each side i guess where im stuck is how to set the fuel neddle. he was also running 50kehien jets and said to turn the mix screws to 1-1/2 to 2 out and i know that you have to set the tps sensor as well have that set at 495 give or take
So what's the timeline here so that we can get this straight?
1) It was running great, had a Factory Pro kit in it.
2) You put a 2-1 exhaust on it and it didn't run so well.
3) You decided to adjust the carbs and bought a DynoJet kit.
First off, I think the shorter spring is a stiffer one that came with the Factory Pro, not just a cut stock one. The jet kit also has instructions to drill out a third hole, so that wasn't just the PO's idea.
Did it always have the K&N or did the stealership put that in?
Personally, if it were me, I'd go back to stock everything and make steps from there (or maybe 8542Hawk's setup). Some people have got the K&N to work, some have got the jet kits to work, but stock will definitely work with a stock bike. Then, start adjusting for your exhaust. It won't run well at first with this setup, but at least you're not playing with several variables at once. If you can grab a stock set of carbs and stock filter at a reasonable price that is...
Actually, personally, I'd cut my losses and go to a stock exhaust header/mid pipe as the 2-1 just doesn't seem worth the effort IMO (and put my energy into something that will get the bike running better rather than just back to stock)... but I get that if you've got a specific streetfighter look in mind this isn't an acceptable answer, haha! I think Autoteach had a custom exhaust that he spent a lot of effort tuning for and may have some pointers...
I mean this as a friendly request, but it's much easier to diagnose if we get the details in a little more order... smartphone no punctuation text reads kind of frantically. No offense meant by that, just tryin to help
