VTR1000 with a difference

Hi folks.
This was my Firestorm/Superhawk as it was in september.
I've had it for a few years and it was always a good bike but I fancied doing something different with it.
I have moved on a bit with it so bare with me while I copy the pictures over here.

I had these forks spare from a crash I had 3 years ago.
I replaced the bent Stanchions with a set from a Trail bike which are 120mm longer.

I wanted the Swing arm moved back but it gave me an idea of where I was working and where to start.

I have got the Engine and Rear Wheel Bolted down and aligned, Forks have been assembled, Headstock turned for bearings and this was a second mock up before I started wrapping a Frame around it.
I suspect, I might have screwed up it's great handling?

It Doesn't look like I've done much here but the other side is exactly the same and that took a couple of Hours to get right.

Tube = 34mm ERW with 2.5mm wall.
Headstock cut from a piece of 60mm CDS.

Bender = Standard hydraulic Staffa (see picture)

Welder = Murex 180 Tradesmig

Notches done by Hacksaw for the long sliced ones and grinder with a 1mm
slitting disc for anything around 90 deg.

While it is obvious that you have a lot of talent for design and fabrication, I personally find it regrettable that you are putting it to use to build a chopper (just what the world doesn`t need IMO, another chopper....). Despite this, I want to wish you luck and lots of fun with your project.

P.S. How I wish I had your skills and access to your tools...

Sorry to upset you mate. Maybe this is the wrong forum.
This is my first chopper. In fact it is my first 'ground up' bike build.
The the idea came after seeing what the guys in Thailand are making with homemade tools and loads of ingenuity.
This whole thing will be made in a garden shed in Liverpool with no expensive tools on a budget of 600 quid.
I have a 200 quid chinese lathe, a worn out Drill press a few Grinders and other usual stuff that everyone has got.

The plan is to make a bike I can show the lads in Thailand that will be of interest to them. Built the way they build their bikes.
As for design and fabrication, I'm making it up as I go along. I've made a couple of VW Trikes before but nothing like this.
If it doesn't work out I'll cut it up and make something else.

Looks like doing a valve adjustment on the rear cylinder is going to be a pain.

While I am a sports bike guy, it is a pretty cool project.
So what are you going to do with the rads? Hide them in the rear section somewhere?

Keep the picks coming.....

Sometimes you have to suffer for your cause.

On the other hand, the Motor comes out of these in less than an hour.
I am making it so the whole Bike un bolts into 2 big pieces and before final assembly I'll replace the chains, Tensioner and do a shim service. I've got 6 bikes so it'll probably take 5 years to clock up 16000 miles.
I used to use it as a daily ride and clocked up over 50,000 but over the last 2 years it's only done 3000 because I riding other things.

I'm in the middle of making a Rad out of a Heater matrix at the moment.
I'll sort out pics of that later on to keep continuity on the thread.
I'm working on 3 other projects so just do bits as and when I feel like it.

I know in the States you guys use different names for Parts so please ask if you don't know what I'm talking about.
I want to use the least number of stock Parts as possible so I'm going to make the Swing Arm from scratch.
These are the Parts for my £10 Swing arm.
It took 4 Nights to turn up this stuff on my little Lathe.
The Bearing holders were easy but the Stainless Spacers came out of 40mm Solid bar.
The Rear hub ring took a few hours too as that had to be taken from 75mm ID to 115mm ID. I will use the internals from the VFR800 Single sider.

Next job was to Bolt these parts to the Engine and Rear Wheel to be joined together.
Again I will be making it in Tube using inspiration from my Friends in Thailand.
I had the Engine and Rear wheel Aligned on the Table using the original Swingarm, bolted them down to keep it all straight then removed the Swing arm and slid the Wheel back in to the position I wanted it.
Double checked the Sprockets with a spirt level and went for it.

What rake and trail are you going for, what triple setup are you going to be using or are you going to need to make a set. Im going with inverted 43MM forks off a dirt bike for my set up.

are you getting any flat spots or kinking in the tubing when bending? We packed sand in the tubes for our bending, prevented some of it but was not perfect without a mandrel bender

Don't worry about Thread jacking mate.
I love to talk with other builders and see their projects.

I have just made this mutant Frame for a friend of mine who got all excited when this VTR started taking shape. I finished it last night so I can get back on with my VTR now. Looking at you Harley it should be to your taste.

If your bends are crushing. The pipe is loose on the former or the former isn't deep enough.

Nice build, great fab work!

What tail section is on the bike in the first pic, before dis-memberment?
