Show me your rear end!

Ok, get your heads out of the gutter. I just recently purchased my first streetbike last month and of course it was a 98 Superhawk. I did a few minor cosmetic mods such as new grips and flush mount blinkers in the front but I'm looking for an under tail kit or fender eliminator and a tire hugger. I am very close to just hacking the stock one apart but would rather buy a nice clean one. I read a couple threads here and there but couldn't find one just about under tail kits. I found a couple on ebay but I'm just unsure about what companies make decent parts as it is my first streetbike. Any pics or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Looking for a quick easy way to clean up the tail. Can't stand these honkin' blinkers hanging off the sides. Thanks!

Check out post #29 on my build click here
If I remember right, the undertail that came with my bike was a Powerbronze, and the hugger is off a Triumph.

Hey thanks a lot. I love what you did with it. Although, I'm looking for a more direct fit. I'm not really looking to do any mods to make them work. How was the installation? Easy to do?

The undertail was super easy, because it was made to fit the bike. I just didn't like how there wasn't any mounts up front (under the battery), that's why I made those brackets with rubber buttons to hold it up. I could have used some screws or something to fasten it, but I wanted it to look nice since it was exposed.
The hugger was easy, just time consuming, because it was made for a Triumph Daytona 955.

NVDutchie, integrated tail light? What did you do with your stock fender, is it just cut? Looks clean. Thanks again everyone.

NVDutchie 07-05-2013 01:29 PM

Yes, Integrated tail-light China special it works pretty good except for the wiring was a bitch , no instructions .. stock fender cut it with a hacksaw , filed/sanded it down . hiked up the plate and punched a hole in it for the seat lock ..

Fender

I have a 98 VTR1000F A. The owner before me did a half fender kit I'm guessing. I need a kit to hold my rear faring in place. It jumps around when I ride and now it is broken. Any one know what pieces I need? I bought the STOCK License Plate Holder with Tag Light but it doesn't fit ANYTHING there.... HEEEELLLLPPPP

Please.

Oh and there is also NOTHING holding my seat down.... there is nothing in there

saige 01-22-2014 07:42 PM

i will try to help, but need more pics.top view pic,and is that a after market under tail.
most time the original under tail is cut to accommodate a after market under tail.
you may be missing a lot of the original.
i don't understand when you say, your seat is not being held down,do you mean you can take it off and on with out a key or a lock.
some more detailed pics might help.

996thehawk 01-23-2014 08:11 AM

Yea, I would like to see a picture of the back as well. It looks like that is some kind of aftermarket undertail.. I think you will need to buy the entire factory undertail if you want to go back stock. Does it always rest so close to the back wheel like that?

Splika 01-23-2014 05:02 PM

correct.. it has no latch or key or anything. who ever did this really did it wrong. I would like to go back factory (if anyone has their old pieces) or aftermarket eliminator kit...

And thank you for the speedy reply!!!

And!.!.! I bought lots of fun new parts!!

7moore7 01-23-2014 05:44 PM

Your tail fairing mounts are probably broken. There should be two tabs on it that line up with the tops of those two risers at the end of your sub-frame (first picture in post #18). These tails aren't held on by much more than that... they're not load bearing so the wrong hit or weight on it could snap them. May be able to pic one up on e-bay or repair it on your own (I've had to do this with mine)

Looks like you've piled a lot up! That's a full service worth of tools in one shot!

Splika 01-23-2014 06:51 PM

I am going to buy new plastics on ebay.. but I want everything to fit so I am not wasting money. Already bought the factory tail light / tag mount. doesn't align with anything...

And thanks! Spent some cash on all that!

Don't forget to upgrade that old R/R you have on your bike.

sorry took so long to respond.
from what i see,you need to get the original under tray that comes with the bike, than cut it to fit the after market under tail.
it only requires to cut the tag and blinker set up off of the stock piece.
you are missing the lock, that is why the seat wont stay in place or lock.
those wires are a mess.im assuming the bike has l.e.d.'s,you can get the l.e.d relay at cycle gear to help correct some of the wiring, this will allow the bulbs and l.e.d. to work together.its about 20 or so,or you can go to LED Lights, Bulbs & LED Lighting Accessories - SUPER BRIGHT LEDS to get it a little cheaper and can get some bulbs to put in the dash, parking light etc etc......
for the lock set,if you want one key for everything, you will have to buy a whole set off of ebay or something once and if you get eveything you need, than the undertail will be right,it will only take a couple of fasteners to get it to stay in place.
the best mods for this bike is.........
rectifier or A.K.A. R/R
can chain tensioner or A.K.A cct
throttle postion sensor A.K.A. tps sensonr
pair system
service manual
i will include all links to this to help get you started and some pics from my work to give you ideas.
good luck.

Ok cool. I think I am going to buy that under fender piece.. it says it does not fit a 98 but I think its wrong. I have a piece that I ordered on ebay that is metal and has a tag light on it. I do not see how this works together with that fender piece..

Splika 01-25-2014 07:17 AM

OK I did it!! Grit my teeth and pressed complete order. $68.03 for under tail mud guard. First process in Peace Of Mind!

Yes the wiring was a complete NightMare.. I finally got the lights to work (that was not my handy work) I will be re doing the wiring once my part comes in to make sure they are proper length.

996thehawk 01-25-2014 07:47 AM

I would install the stock undertail first. See how you like it before you hack it all up for that aftermarket undertail that you have. IF you don't like it and think it's too bulky then you can cut it down however you like. Good luck and don't forget to post pictures when you're all done!
