Messin' with the mirrors
Guess it was last weekend I made the mistake of unscrewing the mirror from it's post. turns out there is a spring, three cups and a nut that start rattling around once you do that. No hope of lining things up to re-attach. So knowing that I'd have to cut open the mirror (or buy a new one) I thought I'd try installing a turn signal and remove the one from the fairing. Here's where I am at this point. I made a bracket to mount the LED and epoxied it into the mirror housing. Then wired the LED and installed that. There is an existing hole in the mirror that I drilled out for the 2 wires and added a grommet. The lens was a generic one from Pep Boys that I cut up then hit with a heatgun to get it to contour to the mirror front (before I cut the hole). I need to finish making the box for the resistors so it will be both running and turn signals. Oh, I also made the mirror post 1 inch longer.

I was thinking of doing exactly this same mod. You mod came out good! I just wished the stock mirrors extended about 1.5 inches further out without having to modify them :/. Glad you had the thought upfront to tackle the extension as well.
Good job.
Good job.

R1? I didn't think those came with turn signal mirrors.... http://www.motorcyclenews.com/upload...yzf-r1blue.jpg
Maybe you meant GSXR or ZX mirrors?
I am looking for something that is both a turn signal/running light + good or better visibility than the stock mirrors. I haven't seen anyone say anything about the speedzilla or emgo mirrors being better or worse than stock. Would like to know though.

Thanks guys,
I've only done the one side so far. I'm riding it to work tomorrow, so I can decide if it's worth doing the other side. I like my elbows and all but... The extension didn't go as planned. I cut the stalk about 3/8" down from the cup (where the mirror swivels), thinking I'd braze a piece of aluminum in there. Spent some time filing a 1" round bar down to the right shape. Went to tin the stalk only to have it start melting immediately. Turns out the mirror stalk is pot metal, not cast ali. Plan B was to drill and tap a hole in both pieces to screw a stud in, leaving a 1" gap. Then I used that plumbers epoxy (the stuff in a stick that you knead) and formed it around the stud in the shape of the stalk. Sand and paint. Once I got over the irritation, it didn't take that long and it still looks stock.

I'll take some when I do the other side. I wasn't really sure if it would work. Plus it was getting late on a Sunday ( read "Get this **** done already!"). I don't usually have time to work on the bike during a work week and I wanted to ride before Saturday.

Here's how I did the extensions. Started by cutting the stalk. If I had to do it again, I'd cut closer to the middle. There is a bolt head imbedded in the pot metal for the mirror to screw onto. It makes drilling straight a bit of a challenge. My thought was to make the extension in the narrow part.
Here the stud is threaded into the small end, you can see the head of the bolt here. I offset my hole to try to avoid it.
I roughed up the ends of the stalk so the epoxy would get a good bite and hold better.
Here is the epoxy I used. Hardens fast, sands well.
Here the epoxy is mashed in, then feathered a little. I tried to have extra material all around for sanding.
And here it is sanded.

Thanks, for me, time in the garage making things is quality time. Cute girls walking by with their dogs is a bonus too. Not something I get to see if I'm inna house.
