Looking for black rims
Looking for black rims
i have a set of stock rims that are chrome, and in very good condition. i am looking to change up the attitude of my bike a little though, and i am looking for black rims. does anybody have any advice on what to get, or a possible trade?
You could probably get a nice dollar for your rims if you sell them. You could either buy another pair of stock superhawk rims and paint or powdercoat them or if you like the 6 spoke wheels use the older cbr wheels. Probably break even or maybe even make a few bucks in the process.
I just purchased a yellow 2000 VTR, stock grey rims, think black would look good, how are people "painting" them? Is powder coating the best way to go? I know there is a heating cycle with powder coat, tires off???? What about wheel bearings??? Anyone have success with other kinds of paint..rattle cans??
I'm a newbie with this bike..riding since 1965..I'm 58, wife is 56, got her a 250 Ninja..whee
Appreciate help

Are you anywhere near Massachusetts? I have a set of black six spoke cbr wheel I'd be willing to trade. Rear is off a cbr900rr and the front is a 17in off a cbr600f3 so they should just bolt on. Can you post pics of your rims and if you are interested I'll post pics of my set.
Thanks for the response
I live in the Western part of Canada so shipping would be nasty. I am thinking more of painting what I have..Is it a total bolt on for these rims..brakes, axle spacing etc.???

Powder coating does require a "heating cycle". The wheel bearings and tires must be removed 1st. A catalized or epoxy based paint is not as tough as powder coating.
Thanks for the feed-back..
Kind of what I figured..was involved with metal protecting shop years ago, pretty sure tires were off..suspected the bearings as well.. Good to know
..Our riding season is about done..yuk..but now begin the fix up period..Likely going to do the cam chain tensioners..Bike that I just got has 7000 k.m.s or about 4400 miles.. but with our shorter riding season.. bike must be ready to ride without any melt downs...

I painted my dark gray wheels black using a spray can and I like the results. I had accidentally taken a bunch of paint off of one of the wheels with brake cleaner, so I decided to paint them black. So far, after about a year and a half, the paint has held up pretty well.
I used an etching primer and then painted them with Plastikote semi-gloss black wheel paint. The finish actually looks more satin than semi-gloss and for that I'm glad. You can't really see much in this picture, but I do like the black better than the stock dark gray.

Black wheels
Thanks Killer..
Took your info down...I may wear these tires off a bit more in the Spring and then mount new rubber and do the paint thing..I'm sure changing tires is tough on paint..

I took the tires off the wheels to paint them. The only nicks I have on the wheels happened when I mounted new tires, but they're not bad, and they probably wouldn't be there at all if I had waited a couple more days for the paint to cure.
RONVTR,
Could you send me or attach a couple of pics of your bike. Looks like you have chrome wheels...my bike is red also...I would like to see what it would look like out of curiousity.
Thanks in advance

I've attached a pic of the VTR as requested... I no longer have the bike. However, I did keep the wheels. The wheels are not chromed. They have been powder coated in "Near Chrome". This finish looks like a satin polish of aluminum. I can't remember exactly, but I think the cost was in the $200 - $250 range.
It changes the look of the bike big time. I like it.
Blends in nicely with the rest of the aluminum on the bike.
The look of aluminum without the required surface finish maintenance of polished aluminum...I definately like it.
I'll store this idea for the future.
Thank's a lot !
