First brought my bike to my dealer to work on it a bit!
Lovely small shop , been coming there for years. If you ask, you can still do something yourself in the evening time. Great guy, always willing to help you out.


I swapped the clutch plates for carbon ones
And swapped the flywheel for a lightened/balanced one
Various other stuff

I have finally decided to deliver my bike cross country to Jerryt.
This is a builder/welder who is well known on the Dutch message boards.
He specializes in organic shaped frames, hand built tanks, swingarms, underbelly exhausts.... you name it, he can build it and does it from a "shed' behind his house! See his photoalbum here, check his Dutch topic here!

So I brought my bike from "Zeeland" the southwest to "Fryslân" all the way in the north.


He has now made a start on my bike:





He is going to make a linkpipes, 2 tubes on the right side!

Sooooooo it's been a while...

But, good news: it runs!

Really had my doubts whether it would start
after what I did to the wiring and the carbs and stuff...
But it fired up right away!

I let it run a bit more now. It starts right up everytime.
But it's running so rich, that every hit of throttle is answered with a big bang!
Hmmm wel... at least it runs!

For some reason it stops running when coolant temp gets around 70 degrees.
I think that is somewhere around the temp that the thermostat opens?
Maybe its not linked at all? Any thoughts?

Also took out the DB killers... thoses Yoshi's are wide open now and loud as hell.

Thermostat may be stuck open.

What's the richness like with the baffles in? May be too free flowing with carb and air filter setup. Some good info on characteristics of exhausts and how they affect engine performance:

The exhaust is how I want it > so that has to stay as is
So have to fiddle with the carbs now to make it work!

No idea how rich it is running. Haven't been to the dyno yet.
I think I will swap carbs with my other bike for a test.
If that setups works better, that will be my startingpoint...

 

yeah how the carbs interface with the exhaust and airbox is the trick. You got a wide open free flowing exhaust, and who knows what for carb and airbox.........they all affect each other acc to the literaturs.

Did you pull the plugs and read the color for richness?

Accord to one of those links, you can set up the exhaust and then tune for it, so you should be able to tweak your airbox, jets, needles, and mixture to match the exhaust flow for your present exh set up if i'm reading right.

The reason i was saying about putting the baffles back in was that extreme changes help to highlight the direction you need to go. Also, try to run without air box/filter to see the diff between restriction and free flow air intake. Dummies like me who don't understand the technical aspects of what's causing what have to use this method and it works well for alot of things where settings are critical. e.g., suspension settings.

you need to find out how the carbs are set up as a baseline and go from there. Then there's the airbox flow relative to exh flow.

Checked TPS? carb sync in the ballpark?

My interest has shifted in the past 3 years from motorbikes to kitesurfing.
That is the main reason that the bike took forever to build. Plus that I hardly ever ride nowadays, just too busy.

I always dreamed to built a blackbird with a turbo... I even was gathering some parts... but I think I will leave it at that.
See, some people are master fabricators and have plenty of tools & materials to use. But I am not a professional mechanic, so sometimes I have to learn by trail & error. It just takes too bloody long.
That is also where I went wrong with this bike; should have done one small project after another.

 

So where is the Bike now?

I have been to your country many times as I am married to a girl from Utrecht and have been so for 32 years .

It's a shame that everyone thinks that Amsterdam is what holland is all about.

Curious as to what has happened with the bike!

Here is a picture of me at the beach in Holland.

I am a very keen surfer and have been for 45 years so I understand that sometimes bikes take a back seat when conditions are right.

Yep the bike is still in my possesion! and I am not looking to sell after all the time/money I put into it. This bike is mine forever.

Will be taking her apart soon for powdercoating and painting.

 

Would love to see it when painted!

 

Had it in this condition for a few weeks
Drove it a bit and resolved some minor problems (cooling leak etc)





Took it apart again






Also removed some unnecessary stuff.




From frame, subframe and swingarm, I will remove all unnecessary bolts and theads, like those rad mounting points etc. Weld them full and then grind them even again.
Will make the frame nice and even!


Have to deliver the stuff to powdercoater on saturday morning.

That is the one thing that bothers the heck out of me. When I see someone make a streetfighter out of the VTR1000F and they powdercoat the frame, but don't smooth the frame. I am so happy to hear that this is what you are doing!

Can't wait to see pictures of this bike back together!

This has to be one of my favourite bikes.

I am not into street fighters as such but this lives in my Man Cave!



And so does this!




I wish I could work out a way to make the Tuono tail interchangeable with the Storm.

However at the end of the day these bikes are all good in their own right, but the Storm has more character in my opinion and I'm sure that you of all people know just how well it responds to modifications and attention.
