Lightbulb composite body panels

hey everyone, i am starting to build composite body panels for my 98 hawk, i build boats for a living and we work with this stuff all the time so why not? I was thinking about makin a bunch of them but i wanted to see if there would be a demand for them, carbon fiber would be the first go round and the next would be a carbon fiber/ kevlar weave, the kevlar/ carbon looks sick. I have so far made front fender and rear cowl, fairings next, drop me a line if anyone is interested. I also would like to know of any inverted front end swaps for my hawk, has anyone done this and how involved is it?

I think everybody would drool over them but the required prices would keep most from actually buying them. We'd love to see some pics of your work! As far as the front end swap it's not too bad. I swapped an RC51 front end and am just about done. Have only ridden around my neighborhood, and I'm about to get it computracked for a little piece of mind. The only downside is a reduced steering lock, which I know with a little work (i'm kinda over it and just want to start riding) can be overcome. It's only a pain when moving the bike around in the garage/parking and maybe if you try and make an extremely tight u-turn.

The bike has been around for 10 years now so a lot has been done to it by folks all over the world. Here's some CF fairings from Italy. A few US riders have bought his stuff:

you guys would be surprised how inexpensive this **** really is, its more or less the time is takes to make the molds for them and i have to do that to make the parts for my bike. I am not lookin out to make a fortune, just wanna get my name out.

How much progress have you made so far? I'm in the st. pete/ tampa area relatively frequently and I'm definitely curious.

I'm in S.Fla but go to Jennings about every other month or so and could always do a little re-route. I'd like to see what you've got going.

are you thinking of full fairings or addition to existing ones? For a decent price I would be very interested in a chin fairing and possibly tail section.

Go4it!

Yep, I know what you're talking about. I'm a sailboat designer and have been working out what I want to see on my S'Hawk. Thinking about Kevlar/epoxy. As light as carbon but more flexible and damage-tolerant (I hope) Also looking into a one-piece tail section/subframe in carbon/Kevlar that'll fit a Sargeant seat. With an ETI fuel cell,I could be dropping some serius weight (and lightening my wallet a good bit) AND have a full fairing that's smaller than many. Hope this works... (Time I reminded myself again of KISS)
BTW, did you see the German guy's 350# (WET!) 999R Duck a couple of issues back in Cycle World? WHOA! Just to get a S'Hawk under 400# wet would be huge, especially if you can do it streetable! Just say bye bye to all those 600's as you torque past them. (A stage 1 cam/hc pistons/full exhaust could well keep them in the mirrors, too)
Why put so much in to an old bike? Won't be seeing anyone else riding one. Won't carry drool bags for onlookers. Won't have to say "I know 5,000 other people in Portland have one, but my TBR exhaust makes mine different!"

Durbahn actually has done a few things for the Superhawk, one of which are ducts for the rads. They're pricey though. I think it would be pretty easy to get the Superhawk under 400# wet. With my single exhaust I'm at about 430. Currently I don't have any extreme mods, just a CF front fender, CF hugger, PAIR removed, single side exhaust, and....that's about it! With a carbon fiber tank, Sharkskinz, Al fairing stay, Al subframe, and a hack job on all the unnecessary parts you could get it less than 400#. It might not be streetable (the headlight weighs like 5#) but it'd be a wicked track weapon!

Hey Stumpy,

Any scrapes or dings? How does it look fromt he rear and.... how tall are you. I'm 6'2" and find my legs a little cramped at times. Will this help? Also, how is the foam padding for any ride of length?

Here's what used to be CarboTech's show-bike (that now occupies my garage). It's pretty much all carbon bodywork, hugger, front fender and even the tank. The tail piece is the only part of the bodywork that's still plastic.

And no I don't want to sell any of it.

give me a ball park idea of cost for side full fairings please....im getting ready to remove my rear view mirrors and installed rear view cams overlapping 180 degrees and 1.8 inch color screens into the flats of the front fairing..should give it a nice clean look... if i cannot fix it, then it must not be broke...bill
