bi-xenon HID bulb switch
Hey everyone,
Ive been looking at all the retro fit HID headlighting, so i looked into a bi-xenon HID bulb that comes with all wireing and it says for the hawk it is a direct fit to OEM housing. But i have read in other forums that HID bulbs could get too hot for the factory housing. Any advice before i mkae the buy?

The HID bulb burns hotter, yes, and may cause problems with the housing, but the bigger issue is that the filament burns in a different location than the standard bulb. What this means is that all of those carefully designed reflectors in your housing are now reflecting light from a different spot, which means totally uncontrolled light. Instead of a nice cutoff just below the horizon, the light is spewed all over the road and into other drivers' eyes (not safe for your or them) and you won't get use of the full brightness of the HID conversion.
The better way of putting an HID into your bike is to do a full retrofit, (not just conversion), which includes buying a projector and putting that into your housing. The projector is basically just a reflector so that you get a clean cutoff and controlled light... It takes a little more effort, and costs a little more but is much safer and will make full use of the HID technology.
I had very good luck with the guys at this place:
The Retrofit Source online: headlight upgrades for all applications
I knew nothing about the bike or electronics and they set me up with everything I needed and the light worked on the first try. There are plenty of other places to find projectors/ballasts/lights/ etc, so feel free to look around...

Lucas- did you get the two page instructions with the setup? I have a .pdf of them if you didn't (it's too big to attach to the thread). The only major modification that you will need to do is mounting the projector into the housing. I am not using the standard housing, so don't have much knowledge in this area, but can help out with the rest of the setup. Basically, these things are designed for cars, so one set of Ballast/ground/bi-x solenoid wires is unused. There are two sets of these wires- one is much longer, I'm assuming to cross over to the other set of headlights in a car- you can cut it or hide it away. Once you know that, everything pretty much has a designated plug and you just hook it all up.
I can't quite remember, but I may have needed to extend my battery wire as well.
When hooking it up, remember a couple of important things: 1) don't touch the bulb with your skin/fingers. The oil on them will cause problems. 2) Don't turn your electronics on with the ballast plugged in but no bulb. There is a ridiculous amount of voltage going through the connector which may make for a sad day.
As for your concerns, these bulbs take more energy to ignite the filament, but will draw less juice from your battery while running. In other words, your other electronics won't be dim and it's easier on your electrical system to keep on...
