My VTR

Had a blast at my last trackday on 7/29 over at Pocono (formula USA circuit). I converted it back to street trim, which basically means removing the sharkskinz fiberglass upper and putting the stock stuff back on .. I leave the tail and seat as it for convenience but still have a clean oem set in the basement.

Next trackday is at BeaverRun outside of Pittsburg, PA on Aug. 10th. Hope to see some SHawks there!
cheers..

Hey Darren,

I totally forgot that you were getting gixxer calipers. I see you got them on now. So how are they holding up for track duty? What pads are you running?

Yeah, nice and easy swap, just as you explained a while ago. I'm using EBC HH pads in there now and the stopping power was decent for Pocono last week. The problem is with my master cylinder though since I'm using a 929 m/c that I thought would be a good enough match but despite a few brake bleeds I can't seem to firm up the lever feel to my liking. Much too spongy and too much lever travel, enough that w/two fingers I'm running into my other two on the grip---not good.

So I have a 2002 m/c on it's way from a gsxr750... I checked the online parts fiche and they have the same part numbers as the '02 gsxr1000 for the internal piston, so hopefully it will help the calipers perform as they should.
Generally I'm happy with the swap, I just need the right feel at the lever... Man they sure look sweet though :-) Thanks again to Superbling for getting this idea started!

I'm thinking that your mastercylinder bore is too small for the calipers. The 929 setup is really only geared for 4 pistons a caliper and you've added 50% more to that. You should go looking for the master cylinder used to drive the calipers originally so that the bore is big enough to handle the amount of oil that needs to move. Also, remember that gixxers have a reputation for feeling wooden in their brakes.

Actually the 929 m/c I have is a 19mm, and the gsxr is a 16mm, but I'm guessing that in this case it has more to do with piston travel... The 929 m/c is def. mushy and does not give a good feel at tall. When I fit the original on there in a day or two I'll post up with my impressions, but I suspsect that even though the diam. of the piston is smaller, the travel of the piston is designed to be greater w/different leverage and such, at least I hope so.

Re: My VTR

I'm still waiting for the correct size bango bolt to put on the OEM suzuki master cylinder (different thread pitch), so no reports yet on differences in stopping power yet..

But since I was starting to feel a little pulsating from the front brakes, I figured it was time to replace the rotors and have some EBC pro-lites waiting to go on. The directions suggest that I use NEW pads when installing new rotors, but I only have about 200 miles on the new EBC HH pads I have on now and really don't feel like dropping another bunch of change on new pads...

So is it essential?? I'm not too concerned if using my sort-of-new pads will just increase "bed in" time to the new rotors... any thoughts?

I would say it's borderline. New pads bed in within about 100miles normally so you're past the normal point where they would work well with a new set of rotors, but not that far that it would not be worth it.

sorry about the suuuper slow response, I'm juggling a lot these day... .

Anyhow, the frame sliders are the ones from this site: DHM brand/model
http://www.morgandesigns.com/EU/eu_acc_dhm2005.htm

I got mine from e-bay in new condition. If you look at the pics above again, I may have mounted them backwards, especially since I occasionally rub my knee against them when at the track and moving around on the bike a lot. Seems like I can just switch them to opposite sides and have it moved forward a bit.

I usually ride with teamProMotion, www.teampromotion.com , and actually have a credit with them I have to use by the end of the year. I was thinking about doing the October 8th (sat) trackday at Pocono, but haven't booked it yet.
Think you might be up for it??

I've done trackdays with a bunch of other orgs but usually have the best experience with TPM. STT is a close second (Sportbike track time).

Yeah I can do Oct 8th! I'm doing Pocono east this sunday with Reduc, but do most of my days with TPM.

Let me know if you definately are in for the 8th and I'll sign up.

Funny, I just talked to my friend today and we decided not to hit Pocono for the Saturday TPM event, too busy with ther stuff.

The 8th is a definite maybe, but I'll know for sure in a day or two. I'm waiting for a response from my riding buddy who lives in NJ.. We grew up together and now meet up at trackdays since we're at opposite ends of NY.

I run the Blue group with TPM, usually mid pack depending on who shows up. Which do you usually run?

Last time out with TPM (Summit Point) I was running red group. I could probably bump up to blue, its just fun being one of the faster guys in red group.

Let me know if you are able to swing it.

You should def. move up if you're one of the faster guys out in Red, especially given their pretty strict passing rules (read-annoying!). I'll drop you a PM in the next two days either way.
