All the body work is at the painters, the frame is almost torn down too and the engine is ready for cleaning and paint.

Does anyone have any advice for engine cleanup and any kind of paint they can advise me on? Last time I was not 100% happy with how the engine paint turned out after some use and I was looking for alternatives. Thanks.

Seeing the engine out I thought I'd ask about the mileage of the engine and the possible condition of the charging system. CX500/650 are known to have weak stators - they stay quite hot, and the engine has to be pulled to replace them. If this motor is 40K + you might want to consider swapping it out now

For cleaning up the aluminum have a look at this home made soda blaster.

the soda blaster thing had crossed my mind.

I wonder how much soda it would take to do a whole engine?

I too am in the process of making a cafe racer. I started with a 1981 Honda CB750F Super Sport. I plan on using the soda blaster to help clean things up but I have not used it yet so I cannot help you on the amount of baking soda it will require.

I will have to think about if I should build a soda blaster cabinet. Then I could recycle the soda. Plus I am sure more carb cleaning is in my future. Having a setup ready to go would be a benefit.

Huge boxes of baking soda dirt cheap at Costco and cheaper bigger bags at Restaurant Depot if there are any by you. And I believe it's alcohol soluble. I think I remember when I used to make free base........ Just kidding.

Looks great!

My experience machining things: Making 1 relatively easy. Making a 2nd that is the same as that 1 without DRO, not so much. lol

Frame is getting final touches, like covers on openings that are no longer being used. Welds are completed and grinding work done. Then paint prep and finally paint.

I personally think the frame is a beauty in its simplicity.

Dejavu, yes

One piece at a time this is what it looks like now, but the devil is in the details. I always feel like I am doing awesome then the last few bits and pieces seem to kick my ***. We will see though.

That black frame really makes the motor stand out... I like it a lot. You planning on scrubbing up the engine caps any more? Everything else looks so clean now.

Yeah I plan on going over those again. I did the first time around on the build but there is some serious oxidation I will have to sand out.

I got more work done today too. Rear fender is on, I packed the head bearings and bolted in the lower triple tree. Painted the rear wheel hub. Sealed the electrical tray, and yes getting very excited.

It has been a while since a photo was posted so I just wanted to post up the latest. It looks really cool in the natural light better then in the shop I think. All that is really left is a seat.
