Idle control??? and how to set

So the other day I got to felling up my bike. I found a small **** on the right side of the bike under the gas tank. It seems to be the idle control, but I don't know how to set it. I gave it a few turns and got the idle right under 1000 rpm's. I guess my question is how do I set it and will I mess anything up by playing with it? (other than going blind, if I play with it to much)

Keep it around 1200-1300 rpm's. Much lower than that and you're not getting as much out of your oil pump as is ideal. And you've probably already killed plenty of kittens, so play away.

Depending on fabrication year, idle control is set differently. Not by much, but different.

Pre '01 is 1100 (+/-50) '01 and up is 1200 (+/- 50)

And I only go blind from watching too much internet ****...but that's an other issue.
