Whoa-oa-oa! I feel good, I knew that I would

Finally i got the ***** to do my CCT.. Thought it was hard.. but I guess i'm proud of myself for researching the crap out of it..

Special thanks to Tweety, thanks dude for the tip..

Feel so much better since i got this done.. been paranoid for a month now my bike is at 25k, CCT could go any day now.. The rear went extreme well.. the font suck cause its a PITA to take the cover off (rather safe then sorry) but when i start removing the CCT i heard the click of death, oh **** factor set in but it turn out to be the spring of the CCT extended to max. I was relief when i check the chain for slack and timing, good thing i got the safety strape on there. The cam wasn't going anywhere.. so yea everything it back together.. now is it 1/4 turn out or plus 1/4 turn? I got two thread saying opposite thing but i have weak finger so I plus 1/4 I guess we will see when i start it in 2 week.. dont have a tank. body is getting paint.. Cheap CCT.. I saved me some money today, almost took my buddy finger away from him but he is okay.. That drill bit was snappy!!!!

Stock CCT to Manual CCT..

Item
5/16 long bolt
5/16 nut
5/16 acorn nut
5/16" - 18 NC tap

It's a load off no matter how you deal with it. Doing something is vastly better than waiting for the inevitable. BOOM! No - it's more like crunch.

I got to 16k and just parked my bike because I was so afraid it would go at any time. I would either deal with it or I would pay somebody to deal with it but I was not willing to risk my bike for a $100 in parts.

It's immensely satisfying when you have the undivided time to concentrate on a repair like this and carry it through to the end. Bravo. Calitoz would be proud of you.

I have followed Lou's instructions step by step. It's flawless. It's been a long time since I read it but in the day I read it 3 -4 times getting ready to do it myself.

I installed APEs in my 2005 about 2-months ago. This week, I installed them in my brother's 1999. Since then the APE instructions have changed. This is what is on the back of the package now:

Tensioner Instructions
To set the tensioner adjustment, remove the cam cover. Rotate the engine in the running direction. Push down on the chain between the cams and screw the tensioner in until there is between 1/4” and 3/8” deflection in the chain. Lock the jam nut on the tensioner.
CAUTION: If the tensioner is too tight, rapid wear can result. Too loose, and engine damage can occur.

so its a manual adjuster now, meaning you have to open her back up every now and then.

Or is it a done deal and never needs worrying over again?

I really need to do mine. I'm at 22K, and still have the stockers...

And I've got APE's sitting there waiting!

Yeah, it's a mental load off for sure. Damn Hawk motor is noisy enough anyway, that you start getting REALLY paranoid sitting at stop lights...I would swear I was hearing the chains slapping. Of course, after installing I was also paranoid that i had either gotten them too tight or not tight enough. 12k mi later and it's still going strong, so I guess it worked out ok. I don't think adjustment is necessary other than a check when you check valve clearances as the chains have already gone through their initial stretching. Of course, YMMV...

It's pretty much a done deal.. you just have to adjust it to the right spec. then check on it once in a blue moon that,s all

I started mine the other day with no fuel tank.. I figure there is enough fuel in the line to do a quick couple sec idle.. and man it was quiet. I guess my CCT was on the end of its life. Good thing i change it..

I am glad everyone found it useful. In fact, I am doing it again soon on the fighter. After reading the thread again, there is a lot more information from others that I found useful as well.

Thanks Doug.
