Who has the Best Seats for VTR's?
#8
has anybody ever tried to modify the stock seat for comfort? Say dual-density memory foam or gel-pad inserts or soemthing like that?
I ask because i did this on my VTX and the difference was night and day....so was the cost comparison

Actually, I did have Gel Pads put into mine - but for long days it still not great, but better than stock. And as I'm riding from Easton, Pa to Indy for MotoGP wanted to get a better seat for my fat ***.

I have a Sargent, and have had Corbins on another bike, and both are an improvement over stockers. I've put over 500miles on both the Sargent and stocker, and the Sargent was more comfortable about ~1hr.
My wife would agree about the passenger sections also (the Corbin was better there). She didn't really like the stocker much, but the Sargent is somewhat better...she's the reason I bought it. The Corbin was better but is poorly shaped for the VTR passenger. She REALLY likes the Gunfighter/Lady models (I've had those for a Hawk and VFR), but there isn't one for VTRs.
They're shaped very differently than stock, and may increase your "seat height". I'd try to find one to sit on before buying. Probably any aftermarket sportbike seat would give you an idea of the basic feel.
BTW, both are probably heavier than stock, the Sargent slightly, the Corbin much heavier.
Corbin uses a fiberglass seatbase, where Sargent looks similar to the stock plastic (though red colored). I've never seen a steel seatbase on a modern sportbike (80's or later), stock or aftermarket, so I have no idea where JesseW might have gotten that idea. I've never seen a Corbin that was steel...

I had a Corbin on my Hawk GT. I bought it in about 1990 and I was quite happy with it.
I bought a Sargent for my VTR mainly because of information on this site about poor customer service by Corbin. I like the moulded plastic base. It fits well and is reasonably light. The seat cover is like new after about 6 years of use. The only problem I had was with the plastic cowl that fits over the passenger seat. There's a little tab at the back of the cowl that fractured. I suppose it's because the Sargent is a bit thicker at the back of the passenger seat than the stock one is. I fixed it with Plastex.

Ofcourse there is... http://www.corbin.com/honda/vtr.shtml.
I see them on ebay from time to time... but they still go for quite a bit.

I used both on a VFR and have had one or the other on several other bikes. Corbins have a heavier fiberglass pan (not steel) and are very firm.
Bottom line: either is greatly better than stock (so I didn't vote), I give the edge to sargents on shorter rides while corbins win out at the end of a very long day (9+hours, etc). Everybody's butt is different. Marinehawk has one made of steel.

Inde,
I know they call it that, but compared to their other G&L models the passenger section is a joke. Besides they don't have a "Gunfighter" model only.
Most of the other (including VFR & Hawk) "Lady" models have sections shaped like the front and widened slightly for better comfort. Maybe it's better than the Sargent, I have sat on one (firmer like 'Bling said), but not my 'passengers'. The one for HawkGTs felt good.
Also, Corbin's service isn't good, they're heavy, and the covers don't last as long as Sargents.

They're seats for slightly older models (Hawks, 600Fx, etc.) to give them a solo saddle look. It seems they've gone away from this name as more models have solo seat covers/cowls?
I think they haven't released one with this name for a while.

After all this - I'm gonna do it myself - Guy from another site turned me on to this - hell I might even start a side business re-doin Honda's rock seats.

I have a gunfighter on my 87 GSXR. It looks like a solo, but the passenger area is upholstered and shaped like a solo cover.
I have a Corbin smuggler on my hawk, I haven't ridden it enough to judge it's comfort over stock, but stock Honda seats beat the crap out of stock suzuki seats.

Huh - Geez I don't know about that - My buddys Gixxer seat is fine, as are most of the 'Zukis I've sat on.
My '02 hawk stock seat was terrible - *** killed after a 100 mile day - after I put gel inserts was better - but that was about 5 yrs ago & I want a more comfortable ride for my naga. I guess age & weight have made me softer than I think.
An old rugby saying
"The older I get, the better I was"

A Corbin came with my bike when I bought it along with the stock saddle. Corbin is way more comfortable but my wife prefers the stock saddle when she is on the back. Says the Corbin makes her butt sore even on rides under 1 hour. The Corbin has the backrest but she never sits back that far and rarely uses it to hold on to with her hands so I don't even bother to mount it when she rides with me.

Well I have done 400 miles on the stocker.. It isn't that bad, I am curious to try one of the others but I doubt I will be putting in longer rides than that, and I have no real complaints so.. Some day when I have piles of dough laying around.

FYI, sargent will sell you their foam for $25 plus shipping. 12x12x2inch blank. I've done this mod twice to a stock seat (VTR and VFR) and it's well worth the amount spent but about 50-60% effective compared to their own product. The firmer base, better covers, and their shape design expertise making up the difference. FWIW

Cool - didn't know that - but I already ordered stuff from other site - its a Medical site foam is 3" & adjust to how hot ur *** is
I'll cut it to my seat pan then shape it, glue it, then re-staple my original seat skin.
