What are some common problems?

A few years ago I had an F4 for only a couple years. Never had it long enough to experience any maintenance issues. Had quite a bit of money put into it and nearlly gave it away. Needed quick cash and had to sell it due to a house I bought needed some work and regretted selling it ever since. Only thing is that I could never get the low end torque or power that I wanted from it. Now I found a 99' SuperHawk at a dealer for $2750 ( they were asking $3299) and I know $2750 sounds high but it is super clean, with just over 16,000mi. Now I've had other bikes and I've laid bikes down before and usually there are some kind of tell tail signs if a bikes been down, but this bike doesn't have a scratch on it. It's all stock, exhaust, blinkers, and windshield, everything. The service guy there said it was his bike after an older guy traded it in for a sport / touring bike. The service guy said he had it for a year and once he started riding it the cct broke, ( cam chain tentioner) and bent two valves. He fixed everything and decided to sell it, now that's where I come in. I dont know much of the lingo when it comes to this, but I see cct, rs, or ss, I dont know what ever it is can some of you guys fill me in. I guess my main concern is that what are some common problems with SuperHawks ( like the cct's) that may go wrong, and is there anything I can replace before it brakes, so it doesn't cost me more $$$$$ when it does brake? Thanks for any help.

CCT is cam chain tensioner. Do you know if he replaced with original stuff or swapped in a manual adjuster? If original, there's a chance it will blow again. This board, by the way, is THE PLACE to go for knowledge on the Hawk. Welcome.

I asked and he replaced it with a stock/original tensioner. He also said to get the bike back there after about 3000-4000 miles to adjust the valves because there new. After they break in they may seat different. Does that sound right?

Sam, its not a bad idea to pick up a set of after market cct's. The new ones could go on forever... or could fail again before too long. One of the few draw backs of the superhawk. The other is the R/R (regulator/rectifier). I less serious issue but could prove to be extremely annoying and inconvenient in the form of leaving you stranded on the side of the highway like it did me. Find out if it has the original R/R or an after-market "finned" replacement. If it's the original I would most definitely look into purchasing either an after market finned replacement, or even better yet an R1 swap out. The parts are cheap (under $100 for new R/R) and are an easy install. Other than that keep the fluids changed and the SH will run forever.

just keep your eyes open on the forum and do some ebay searches for those parts, they are not hard to come by.

Hey Sam, To be the the controversialism issue to your questions- Do look thru the searches...
Their are the few of us that believe in the Honda design CCTs are fine for the future(regular inspection) and some logical mechnical skills (listen to your motorcycle, once in awhile) if it sounds like IMPLOSION is possible the-"BE CONCERNED"! !
The regulator issue- Be concerned - I read the outcomes of THAT demon- I replaced mine ASAP -(14k on a 2001)

Agreed. And agreed read the cct thread and decide but if u keep the Honda ones don't tell anyone, it will start a debate about manual ccts

Thanks for the info and advice. If you guys and anyboby else can think of more please let me know. Right now the riding season wont start for a few months here and my purchase is still at the dealer in storage so I have plenty of time to get the stuff I need before I pick it up.

Welcome to the forum!
You've been warned about thr CCT and the R/R, next you might want to replace the seat. Ride it for a bit and see what you think. For me the sargent was my single best mod

I have yet to hear anyone say they heard any warning at all prior to implosion...

Every report of CCT failure I have read reads: "It sounded fine and was running great when boom it blew up."
