Keep an eye on tire pressure as you change altitudes/climates and drink plenty of water to avoid fatigue.

One of the smartest pieces of advice any member gave a novice distance rider is to employ an exercise program for a few weeks before you set out. You will have boring stretches of road but the majority of your trip will be athletic. Fatigue is a major enemy of a motorcycle rider. It makes you stupid, slow to react and prone to mistakes.
