The only bad thing I see about flying out there is you'll be on a bike that's unfamiliar to you other than that go for it! You could always drive down to Jennings and ride there year round and they do offer schools as well, hell I'd even meet you there. Oh and BTW once the track monster bites you, it never goes away!!!! I can hear him now, "Come to the track....You MUST COME TO THE TRACK!!!" Yes dark master, I will be there this weekend my master!

Oh well, everyone needs a hobby. Some people spend all of their money on golf or cars or whatever their into. I can rationalize away track time. I do have some experience with 600's, and from what I read of CSS it's time and money well spent regardless of what bike your on. I'm stoked. Sometimes this far north you forget they ride year round in other places. (it's 40 degrees here right now)

I was thinking California, but Florida would be equally accomedating. The big part in this compulsive plan is do they rent bikes down there? I can take time off and travel, but I'll need hardware when I arrive. What's the big school down there? Yeah, I've always got questions.

The track is working on that now and there are a few people that rent their own with the speculation that you crash it you fix it. There's a few schools that go there, Frank Kinsey, Ed Bargy, and Penguin to name a few, each one a little different than the other. Ed Bargy is supposed to be REALLY good at teaching the newer to the track guys, penguin in between and kinsey more towards race wannabees. But each does do the others as well, if you really want to come down let me know and I'll send you some links. Calli would be nice too though.

I, for once, agree with Superhawk22. :P

Riding a new/different bike will cost you some time to get acquainted with it, which I see as taking away from the time you could spend working on skills.

By the way, Sportbike Track Time and NESBA both go to Blackhawk and Road America. You could ride both tracks, considering where you are. You are also reasonably close to Autobahn in Joliet. (You can look at all these tracks and find their websites from the STT website.) Blackhawk is short and tight, and RA is about the total opposite - loooong straights and fast corners. You may want to stick with one organization to get a deal on multiple track days, if they offer that.

As to the tire issue, STT has a forum section, and they discuss tires quite a bit. Nearly all of them (track day guys, racers, and instructors) agree that you can run good street tires (they endorse Pilot Powers) up to intermediate and even to advanced speeds before you'll run out of grip. The race tires are generally not needed before then, and they strongly advise against them in novice. Their arguments are that you may not get the tires even up to operating temps, and cold race tires have much less grip than cold street tires. Even if you do warm them up, they'll be "used up" in a few track days due to heat cycling, while the street tires would be going strong. (The above was from others on that forum, I have no experience at all with race rubber.)

And yes, track days are addicting.
