Those little bells...

So I've been riding for a while... first Yamaha XS650 in '79... and a bunch in Florida have this thing about putting a goofy little bell on their bike... so far mostly Harley's

Anyway one of them told me EVERYONE put one on their bike... So since in 30 years of riding I had never really seen this, have any of you? Why?

I said it must be a Florida thing... gotta do something to make the ride interesting down here...

They sell those around here in louisiana too. I asked a guy at the one rally i went to what it was, and he said it was a gremlin bell, and it was used to keep mechanical / electrical gremlins from causing you a breakdown on the side of the road.

Just found this link.... wow...

LOL, two things, that southpark episode and the fact that they need a "gremlin" bell...

How I deal with breakdowns: A tool kit
How a Harley rider deals with breakdowns: A magic Bell

I thought it was more of a harley/cruiser thing. Supposed to ward off the evil road demons/spirits...not a big fan of trinkets and things hanging off my bikes, no matter what kind of bike it is, but to each their own, I guess we can use all the help we can get.

They are also called "Angel Bells". Same thing, to ward off evil on the road. Usually found on crusier bikes with tons of other stuff like tassels on the levers and saddle bags...etc. You know the type.

Ahhh yes tassels...my personal favorite. Seems like with every new project (particularly cruisers but my last superhawk wasn't immune) I bring home the first thing I do is break out a nice sharp razor knife and end up with a pile of crap in one part of the garage and a much nicer looking bike sitting next to it. My next thought is that someone actually spent good money on that stuff.

it's more of a cruiser thing, but a little good luck never hurt anyone. Generally, it's said that they work best if they are a gift from someone else, as opposed to just going out and buying one yourself. I don't have one on my SH yet. Perhaps that's the reason I went down at the track this weekend.

When I see bikes come into the shop with gaudy stuff on it, I look to see if it has a bell on it. Yep! There it is! Right on the lower right side frame rail near the front.

Well, you guys up in the north east don't have that much of a riding season anyway, so it probably doesn't matter. :-D

My dad has a cruiser, not a Harley though, I actually got him one. He hangs his from his saddle bag, doesn't look too bad.

Yeah, seriously...what's the deal with the tassels???
The only other time you see them is on a little girl's bike and they're white and pink to match the flower on the handle bar basket.

Are they just another decoration or is there an actual purpose to have crap hanging from your bar ends? Or is it a form of covert communication like a rainbow sticker? LOL.

Reminds me of the wacky ritual some 2 smoke riding guys I knew used to do when they were trying to tune them. Spit on 2 nickels and rub them together before you kick it over...

So, does the one I was given, that I gave to someone else, have twice the JuJu as a bell only given once?

Yes, of course they have a purpose. Otherwise why would they make them? It's for when the Harley rider is stopped they take the tassles off to shoo away the flies.

Nah, Harleys have tassels so they know when they are moving.

The nuts are funny as hell, since you "ride" a motorcycle your bike should be a women. A bike with ***** means you are "riding" a dude.

In the ritualistic world of romanticism, charms and doo-dads give others a clue as to the personality of the owner.

The translation of the ride bells I came up with is 'tinkerbell', you know, the faery that spread majik dust about the set of a Disney movie. I am conflicted though, even after I have clarity, often I wish I didn't have a clue as to the secret lives of the people around me.

I suppose that being amused comes at a price.

I personally have a Gremilin Bell on my Bike. It was given to me from a friend brfore he was killed in a motorcycle accident. he was hit by a drunk driver, and I can say that it is pretty lucky....but then again in irish so I am just lucky in general....=)
