Talking SuperHawk ADV bike - the "Dirty Bird"

Some asked for an update on this project, it is complete and the ride is done - Continental Divide Trail, from Salida Colorado to Wyoming and then a detour to Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, and then back home to El Paso. Not sure how much was offroad (unpaved road, to be more precise), probably around 500 miles of the 3000 or so.

Here is the finished product, in use:

Thanks to all for the suggestions for long-ranging the SuperHawk. One I didn't take, due to time constraints, was an aftermarket seat. The first couple of days were uncomfortable after an hour or so; after two days, I seemed to settle in on the stocker. Carrying an extra 4 gallons of gas in the saddlebags was good peace of mind, but ultimately unnecessary - I could have done just fine with a 1.5 gallon Kolpin.

The Distanzias did great, even in the mud. The 17" front was decidedly a disadvantage over the 21" fronts that the two big KTMs I was with were sporting - but the SuperHawk did everything they did, some things just a little slower.

Overall, it was a fun experiment, and a great trip.

Anybody wanna buy an off-road 2000 SuperHawk with ~10k?

I LOVE seeing rides like this! SH looks good outside of its element on the dirt. Front fender looks like something borrowed from the stealth bomber

OK, now that is COOL! What a blast that must have been (Not to mention getting looks from everyone on a dual sport that you went by...). Congratulations on a great adventure!

Yeah that looks like a blast! How tempting was it to get sideways all the time?

Yeah no kidding on the slides. With those bars, it would be too tempting not to let 'er rip coming out from every turn or big ole sweeper.

Tempting, but the thought of biffing it and ripping my Wolfman tailpack and bursting one of the 2 gallon gas jugs kept that sort of fun to a minimum. I was very surprised at how well the Distanzia hooked up in back - it would rather wheelie than break loose, even in the fairly soft dirt. I guess having about 70 pounds over the rear axle had something to do with the traction. The front was a different monster, though. It always felt as if it was about to wash, but ultimately stuck. It really felt weird, I think it was well-planted but just didn't inspire much confidence on anything but pavement.

When I did a test ride sans the luggage about a month ago, I had some fun experimenting with adhesion in dirt corners. It was a little more fun because I had nothing on it to trash (I had the rashed eBay plastic on it at the time). Now that I'm back in town, I can mess around with it some more without the baggage.

Thanks for the comments. It really was a blast to build up and go mess around with - if only Honda would bring a decent adventure bike to the US...
