Some idiots shouldn't ride
One of our local motorcycle clubs here in DFW like to publicize their idiotic runs through traffic. This guy should have his license jerked and bike impounded. No lane splitting is not legal in this state.

My wife and I were driving home from San Diego late yesterday afternoon in the number 2 lane when, in a long straight section through Camp Pendleton, I see a Gixxer (very recognizable headlight) coming up very fast from behind. He switched lanes to the right no more than 1 1/2 car lengths from our Tacoma's rear bumper. I was going 75, and he was going well over 100. I woke my wife and said "check that guy out". Just then, way ahead on a slight uphill, we saw him switch lanes just as a car was also going for that spot...looked like a close call. My wife said he must be suicidal.
About 7 or 8 minutes later, just south of San Clemente, traffic slows. No emergency vehicles yet, but 2 cars in the dirt center divider and a guy sitting on the guardrail at the right shoulder with his pant leg rolled up exposing road rash. Then I look to the left again and in front of the 2 cars is the Gixxer on its side in the dirt center divider. I'd say he got off lucky, and hopefully he learned a lesson.
RWhisen, I like your latest avitar...very appropriate to the thread.

Yeah, I may be an a-hole for saying it, but I like it when jackasses like that take themselves out. Unfortunately, there's almost always collateral damage to other people and property. They give us all a black eye, and I'm sick of it. It's gotten to where when it's a sunny day around here, the squids just come out of the woodwork. Of course they're fair weather riders, so here in Seattle I at least have many months of squidless roads.
Thanks for including the youtube link Rwhisen. That definitely was the "special-est" video ever! I really liked the part where he was going really fast... um... kinda straight... on the highway...
I agree that riding like that is pretty stupid... but in the long run it'll all get taken care of by natural selection and evolution, right?

I found on this site that in Texas neither riding 2 abreast or lane splitting is illegal, siting nothing was found in any statue or admin. codes of the state

stupid, nonetheless.

"Well I don't have my own bike to commit suicide on so I will just borrow one from the dealer"
I guess this is what people do in states without twisty roads. Looks dangerous and actually quite boring to me.

I was on my way home a few years ago, when traffic was suddenly stopped. I looked to the right shoulder and saw a bike laying on the ground. Then I saw the rider laying there.
He had passed about four cars on a 2 lane road near my house on his F4i. There was a car coming the opposite direction, so he pulled in to his lane. He failed to recognize the 80 mph closing speed on the 4Runner ahead and ran into the back. A friend of mine was driving it, and knew the kid on the bike.
We sat there and watched the helicopter land in the road and sit there, then take off empty.

Stupid. I live along a major highway, which is 4 lanes and NOT divided. My dad and I were out in the yard working on my wirirg on my camper when I could hear the wail of bikes in the distance. Alot of bikes. But one thing caught my attention....the sound of someone trying reallllly hard to clutch up a wheelie. Over and Over, In 1st gear. Then they came right in front of my house, and I see this squid, In a pack of 20+ bikes, hammer off the clutch and loop the bike.... Right in front of my house....into oncoming traffic. The bike went tumbling 200 ft in the oncoming lane, thankfully no one was there at that moment. I walk up to see HER peel herself off the highway and collapse on the shoulder of the road. She thought she was so awesome, telling everyone that she was trying to "rock at balance point". If I wasnt such a nice guy I would've kicked her in the face for being so stupid. My wife and kid could've been trying to turn into home when she did this and there would've been a 600rr in my wife's windshield.
huh? I'm reading a few places that don't say it's illegal, not making it 100% legal, but still very unsafe.
Right off the Texas Dept. of Public Safety
18. Can I ride my motorcycle between cars in traffic?
The law doesn't specifically say one way or the other, but there are several statutes that may come to bear depending upon the circumstances, i.e. right of way, obligation to drive in a single lane, signal intention, passing with safety, etc. Motorcycles are considered equally as cars regarding traffic laws, so the single lane, signal intention and other statutes in the Transportation Code could come in to play.
The main statute that makes "lane splitting" illegal is Transportation Code Section 545.060, entitled "Driving on Roadway Laned for Traffic."
way off topic, just kind of want to find a real answer don't you?

- An operator on a roadway divided into two or more clearly marked lanes for traffic:
- shall drive as nearly practical entirely within a single lane; and
- may not move from the lane unless that movement can be made safely.

Here in California it's not spelled out in the vehicle code that lane splitting is legal, but it's not stated as illegal either. Therefore, it's up to the discretion of the cop as to whether you were splitting safely or not.
Years ago when I called the CHP with this question, they told me that lane splitting should not be done at a speed more than 15 mph faster than the flow of traffic. I'm good with that, and that's the rule I've split lanes by for almost 30 years.
I won't go into the whole story here, but lane splitting probably saved my life back in the early '80s.

Back in about 1989, before carpool lanes on the I-5, I'm riding my '86 CB700SC Nighthawk home from work and it's hot as hell. Traffic is stopped or barely moving on the freeway, and I'd been splitting for at least 5 miles at slow speed. I pull on my clutch lever to shift, and the lever flops to the grip with no resistance. It takes me a few seconds to realize that my clutch fluid has boiled in the slave cylinder, which is right behind #1 cylinder.
I split for several more miles, shifting without the clutch. Then another 15 miles home on the freeway at 65 mph before the clutch started recovering. I got home and did the dumb *** move of feeling the slave with my fingers...instant 2nd degree burn.
When it cooled down, I flushed the fluid with DOT 4.
