went for a brief ride today in the heat and I was hearing some noise and couldn't really say what it was. it would come and go but would happen really when my idle would drop a little... maybe I should take it to a shop to get checked out...

Valve noise is normal. As clearances wear/tighten they will actually get quieter. What makes noise is the cam chain. Its an inconsistent slapping sound.

What oil are you using? These V-twins like the heavier 15W-50 to keep them happy and quiet. It's better oil anyway, at least in the Mobil 1 variety. Go to 1000RR.net and do a search of posts from a guy with the screen name of ScootR. He tests oil for a living. Good enlightening stuff.

it seems to help with shifting some... not sure about any heat or smoothness it adds... wondering if I do need to go with some like a 15w...

I'm assuming using this isn't gonna cause issues other then it being a little more noisy right? or should I really change it out for something heavier? I have been using 10w ever since I've owned it. 12k to now 21.5k

Yup, he was a prolific poster on VFRd also especially when it came to oil threads. He lives right up the road from me (in Texas terms anyway). He left VFRd under the cover of darkness after getting busted for naming names as in oil companies once too many.

Is he still on 1000rr.net? Even after totalling that bike? Supposedly went MVAgusta and haven't heard from him since.

He posts every now and then. Didn't know he totaled his RR though. Since the reincarnation of my VTR, I've mostly been focusing on this forum. I browse the Suspension threads on a regular basis though.

No9, I'd think that changing even brands of oil can change the way a bike sounds and shifts. It might not hurt it, but you might not like it either. I wouldn't waste $20 in oil but try the M1 next time. I guarantee you'll like it!

so I am guessing its when the bike is in neutral correct? if so you can prob around the engine case with a long screwdriver and your ear on the other end it can help with pinpointing the noise if its coming from the top end or bottom end its not ideal but can work. when you idle drops without additional rpms the load on your engine increases and can cause some nastey noises if it drops two much so it sound to me like you may be all right just bump your idle up a bit mine idles 1100-1200 bounces + - a few here and their. how many miles on your rig!!

No9,

Just the regular synthetic stuff. Same thing I put in my cars too. Hard to find up north in the heavier weight at Wally World, but Advance Auto has it. I really need to order it by the drum directly from Mobil. It'd be cheaper that way, ya think?

Don't use the Mobil 1 you use for cars or your clutch will burn out. Use Mobil 1 MX4T instead.

That's not true. That is a FALACY. I've been using M1 regular since the first oil change. I now have 40000 miles on the bike and have never had clutch issues. I took the clutch apart at 25k to install the ignition advancer and the cross hatching was still on the plates from the factory. Oh, and I've not had to adjust the valves once.
