Sniffing around for a petcock

Hi gang,

Well, it’s happened: My petcock is leaking. Dealer’s computer says the kit was discontinued, but K&L claims there are some out there in the world. I’ve tried Ebay, BikeBandit, Ron, Amazon, etc… and haven’t found anything. Does anyone have a line on a kit?

Thanks!

CR

Thanks y'all. I'll look at these Interweb options tomorrow. It's been raining for 40 days here in NH anyhow so no one can smell the gas yet

Ah, cheapcycleparts.com says they don't have it now, too.

Here's an idea: I know that the Goldwing diaphragm fits so I wonder if this unit would do the trick:

Fuel Petcock Repair Kit - Honda Gold Wing Parts & Accessories by WingStuff.com

In the vid they say it's made of a "fuel resistant" rubber that will last longer, so this might actually be a better replacement part than the old K&L? Any thoughts?

Of course these are also sold out until the end of the month...

Where is the gas leaking from? You might smell gas for a lot of reasons besides a bad diaphragm / petcock. I’m sure there’s a pick-you-own-adventure / troubleshooting guide in the manual that would help you ID your problem.

My petcock issue is a small steady leak from the downward facing nipple. It should be an easy fix, but parts are getting harder to find. The Goldwing part I’ve seen listed here is for a specific model, but poking around the wingnut boards show that all 1500s from 88 to 2000 have the same diaphragm.

(The springs never go – and the ones in the Goldwing kit do not match the ones in the SH kit, from what I’ve read -- but it’s the diaphragms that develop leaks anyhow so it’s no big deal.)

My post wasn't good enough for you? It took you directly to the Ron Ayers site and displayed the part number. I guess you were confused because it said Search? Click it, it will take you there!

Man. Someone has his grouchy pants on.

No, I've just called three places and visited my Honda dealership and they've said the same thing. Maybe Ron Ayers is different than BikeBandit and the other sites I've searched or called, but so far everyone says the kit theoretically exists, but is also somehow discontinued.

And anyhow Mr Grouchy Pants... My question was whether this would be an improvement over the K&L, which some people have had to replace more than once.

Ah, just called Ron Ayers and the tech said that 16953-ML0-034 is NOT for the SH and that he shows the kit as being discontinued... Where did you get the number? The description says it's a Cover Set...

pchrist, I'm the worse wrench here, but I'd say that you could be running rich or might have a stuck float or a petcock issue. Is the bike running ok? Have you had the plugs off?

Sometimes you can overfill the tank and the gas will come out the tube, too.

Yep, I called them.

I think a lot of these internet companies lag behind on posting updated inventory on their sites. Maybe you can call and ask where your order is to see if you're actually going to get it...? Because it would suck to wait a week for this and then just get an e-mail saying they didn't have the part... If that's the case. Or have you already gotten one?

Usually all you need is the diaphragm from what I've read. You can reuse the springs and other parts.

That's ok, I see what you're saying and thanks for taking the time. I'm still reluctant to order something that the tech tells me is not the correct part for the bike, especially when everyone else can't find one either.

I know I'm a lazy ***, but if you post that link I'll call them again and walk the tech through it to get to the bottom of it. I just got lasik and the eyeballsies aren't working the best.

I thought Ron Ayers was the shizzle. Didn't mean to sound all Grumpy pants and stuff, was trying to be more tongue in cheek however that doesn't come across to well on the Internet.

I've been having the same damn problem myself. Gas leaking from the nipple, opened it up and it has a torn diaphram. Searching for a rebuild kit has been rediculously time consuming...WTF. Did run across this though.
