Short Motorcycle Tour Prep

Planning on taking the VTR on a road trip this weekend. Leaving San Francisco on Saturday morning and returning on Monday or Tuesday morning.

I havent done a multi-day ride on a bike before. And since I have a cross country trip planned for next year, (SF ---> Toronto Canada) I figured that I better get in some seat time. I also have the Cal24 scheduled in June. 1000 miles in 24 hours!

So far I got my tailbags. To protect the plastics I put on the clear vinyl on the tail section and also on the tank as a tank protector.

Did the exhaust and carb jetting. Not necessary but I wanted more volume then OEM allows.

Hoping to wire up a charging system for my GPS and mobile device today or tomorrow. At the same time I need to fab a GPS mount using the fairing stay. I have an idea... Also need to mount the GoPro camera.

The plan was to ride over the Sierras and south on 395 to Death Valley. It doesn't look like that is going to happen as the summit passes are still closed with snow! So that means a boring ride through the Central Valley. Maybe Yosemite?

I plan on having a small fuel canister for "just in case". It is good for about 15-20 miles. Not sure if I want to camp. Thinking of just moteling it this time.

Going to end the trip by heading west to SoCal and spend the night near the Santa Monica Mountains. This will put me near the entrance of some delicious twisties: Latigo Canyon, Mulholland, Topanga... I have always wanted to ride Topanga!

Then back up the PCH on a weekday so that I don't have to deal with the damn tourists.

PM me if I might be passing near you. We can scrub some tires and grab some coffee. My route is not set and is designed by my enviroment and whatever...

More to follow...

Moteling it might be better as this is your first time out. I have some difficulty fitting everything in tailbags, so consider a tank bag too. I usually use that for things that need to be handy, like rain gear.

If it was me I would ride down the 1 to Monterey. Then take carmel valley road to greenfield. Don't take the freeway but stay on G14 to Paso Robles. Then hop on the 101 s to Santa Margarita. Take the 58 east to taft. Then 33 south to ojai.

I guarantee you will love these roads.

Highway 58 is an amazing road. has it's own rollercoaster. You have not lived until you have gotten both wheels off the ground at over 120mph! I kid you not.

Ride safe, have fun. After these roads Malibu will seem a little bit of a anti-climax.

Before heading south on the 33, you'd want to gas up, since there's no gas all the way to Ojai. There is an above ground tank at the Pistachio Farm near the north end, but I wouldn't rely on that. Just a heads up with our short tank range.

If you go this way, gas up in Santa Margartia. Little mom and pop gas station. There are no gas stations on the 58. Then gas up in Taft for the run over the 33, also a great fun road.
