Problem? 49 state bike to CAL.

As everybody knows CA DMV give you trouble when you try to bring the vehicle never registered in CA. However, I was told motorcycle is expemt.
only 50 state bike is required when sold "Brand New" bike in CA.
so used 49 state bike can register. is that ture?

I moved from So Cal (Corona, CA) to Ohio for job relocation about 1.5 years ago. I kept my house in Corona and renting out and Driver's license is CA. So obviously planning to go back to SO CAL.
I got used SH in Ohio.

Can I bring my SH back to CA when I move back?

Thanks.

The only thing bikes are exempt from in Ca. is the smog test. A 49 state bike with 7500 miles on the odometer can be reg'd in Ca. no problem. If it has less than 7500 miles you can't register it period. If your bike has less than 7.5k miles, arrange to keep it registered in Ohio, even if you bring it to/ride it in Ca. When it clicks over 7.5, you can register it. If you try to register it before 7.5, you'll never be able to register it here.

Thanks!!

I brought SH with 9000 miles in mid June and now 12000 miles so I am over 7500 miles. So I am good on that.

That is what my friend told me, but I heard different story so....

Doesn't matter which out of state plate you have. What matters is the odometer reading. Until you tell us what your odometer reading was, I couldn't say whether it was odd or not.

I bought my SH in Phoenix. It had 7200miles, Drove it back to CA, took it to the DMV with 7600 miles. No issues at all to get new plates. Go for it!! Just make sure your lights and blinkers are good.

If you happen to belong to AAA, you can get everything done at one of their offices. Much more pleasant than the DMV. I was surprised when AAA even had motorcycle plates on hand.

Well that would be odd 'cause under 7500 miles is considered "new" and not registerable. Maybe somebody at DMV did you a favor and wrote it up as 7501? If you have a valid Ca. reg, you lucked out somehow.
