Please don't tell me it's the R/R... Again!

I recently got a new battery (about 2 months ago) because it was not holding a charge and the bike was starting fine for these last 2 months. Recently however the battery has not been holding a charge. I had to push the bike 2 miles home in the dark. I will charge it until it's fully charged, then the charge will last for about one ride.

For example, yesterday I charged it, installed it, rode the bike for about an hour. Started right up today, rode it for about a 1/2 hour, then noticed on the way home some of the electronics weren't working (rpm guage, hi-beam indicator) got home, and it was dead. Wouldn't even click. I replaced the R/R about a year ago, and like I said the batt is 2 months old.

2 miles! that sucks. From your description you are not charging. Could be for several reasons. Look this over and follow the steps. It will help

Not for whoever sold you the R/R Sorry, had to say it.. someone was going to.

Honestly, even a stock R/R should have lasted longer then that all things considered.

Start at the beginning.. Good grounds, clean terminals.. Good plug for the RR.

Personally.. I scrapped all tyhe OEM wiring, replaced it with a FH010 R/R and 8ga marine grade wire direct to the battery. Used a new style sealed plug bought at Easter Beaver at the R/R. and added two grounds to the R/R system.

For what it's worth that sound exactly like both of my R/R failures. Both were stock, one old style one new style. They're just unreliable on this bike. Kind of like my catastophic CCT failure...

I need to learn how to do this kind of stuff... is it something I could do in a weekend down the road sometime?

It's something I could talk you through in a weekend, taking a break each day to do a write up , take pictures, go out for dinner, and go for a ride on Sunday after the job is done... Assuming you can squeeze a set of quality crimpers, heat , 3M heat shrink tube, and follow simple instructions.

I won't jack this thread any more after this, but, yes, I can do all of those things.... later though. You're just replacing your wires with new wires? Everywhere, or just for the charging system?

I know somewhere Tweety said that he added extra fuses and grounds. Upgrading the wiring has very little "bling" factor so you don't hear much about it around the interwebs...

Check out the battery also, just because it's new doesn't mean it's good...and FWIW, I replaced the orginal R/R with a new Honda one and rode the bike another 5 years before I sold it...

I gotta think that replacing a bad part with the same bad part might be working against you. I went through a similar pushing of the bike but it was 100* out. I replaced that one with an aftermarket beefier one, then my other vtr I did the R1 unit plus the eastern beaver wiring for peace of mind.
The wires aren't bling. They are stout positive conections for durability and conductivity.
