Plastic shroud

Just curious if the plastic shroud under the carbs is needed or is it ok to remove it. Will the fuel get too warm if the shroud is removed?

Its a heat shield. It is there not only to protect the carbs, but cables, wires, and to keep your tank from heating up and causing all your fuel to evaporate out of the tank when the pressure builds

I always thought that thing also helped facilitate a calm air pocket for the snorkel to pull from.

I'm pretty sure that's what the consensus was.

Edit: When I assembled my bike, I forgot to put that plastic piece in. Once the engine was installed into the frame, you can't slide that piece in, so I left it out. I have a couple thousand miles on my bike now without it and it runs pretty dang good.

If you paint it yellow, it's 5mph top-end. I have the salt-flat results to prove it.

Interesting.....
When I bought my Hawk in 09', I never knew there was supposed to be a shroud under the carbs, and I have had my carbs off several times.
So I went to Ron Ayers to look up the part number on the fiche....And I don't see it?
Could someone point out the part number for this piece?
Thanks much

I removed mine when I put the Dynojet kit in and have done approx 13,000ks since with no apparent problems.

Our climate is pretty temperate here, maybe that helps too!!

Thanks for the pic E. Appreciate your response.

So I had to go out and pull the blanket off the old girl tonight and check it out. Hmm, I see the left and right plastic scoops on either side of the front carb, and below I see the thermostat and front MCCT on the left side, and the overflow coolant reservoir resting below the carbs.
Just when I thought I knew her pretty damn well. So I Google "carburetor heat shield Superhawk" and go to images and here is what I get.

I take it this is the part? Am I completely blind, or does this really sit below the carbs/coolant reservoir? I can't believe I have to ask again so bare with me on this one. Shhhheesh

EDIT: OK. This part sits behind the steering stem, not under the carburetors. The OP statement threw me. My bad.

Yes that is the part being discussed.. and yes, it is not BELOW the carbs.. but above and forward somewhat.
