Pilot Road 3 - Shredding?
Michelin Pilot Road 3 are here!!!!!! - Page 9 - Yamaha FZ6 Forums - International FZ6 Motorcycle Community Forum

Not sure what to think, I've had mine on for 300km or so and no complaints. I guess this is an isolated issue but then he goes on to say the front shredded and caused a crash. No pics of the front tire though...

These have been pretty popular out here in Japan & haven't heard anything negative so far other than accelerated wear on a Fjr1300 with loads of luggage. Was quite surprised to see the issues this guy had. I had the PilotRoad2 on previously and had no complaints, especially about wear in the middle.
If you read the thread, the OP said it was the second failure of the same type tire in the same manner. Michelin has not responded to his complaints or inquiry. He states that he checks tire pressure regularly. You would think a major manufacturer would immediately look into this and try to ascertain why this guy's tires are failing. Is he mounting them with such a device that stretches the tires which damages the cords? Who knows?
+1 for my other bike. Still fairly new, but I have no issues on my new 2's after 400+ miles. Didn't go with the 3's because of the "new" design - tread and composition. For my needs, the 3's design didn't seem to be an improvement over the 2.
Something doesn't add up. I'm not sure what, but I think there are one or two missing elements to the story. Tire pressure may be one, but what about where it was ridden - the temperature and conditions of the terrain?
Furthermore, I'm not a cynic or conspiracy theorist, but his story and photos don’t add up.
Here’s what I have discovered and noted:
1. 2006 Yamaha FZ6 with odometer photo showing 9,999 miles.
a. Statement was, ".... After just under 10,000 miles on my PR3's..."
b. Owner's commute:
50 miles one way = 100 miles per day = 10,000 miles in 5 months
c. PR3's came out in January 2011.
d. If statement is true, then tires went on just as they came onto the market, in early January. That’s possible, but the odometer photo is the regular odometer, NOT the trip meter. Therefore, the 2006 bike has 10,000 miles, not the tires.
2. Statement about riding that day on the PR 3's:
a. "Wasn't driving too fast (85 in a 70)."
b. ".... am SUPER critical of (tire pressure) due to an accident a few years ago involving my 06 Mustang GT on the interstate at speeds over 130+."
3. Rider's bio says this is his first bike and he is in law enforcement – joined forum in 11/2010.
a. Law enforcement?… and he admits to driving at excessive speeds.
4. Statement about accident:
a. "Even though I went through the back windshield and into her vehicle (you can see my head in the pic), I only broke my hand, cracked three ribs and hurt my mid back."
b. Photo of accident (rear of car and damaged bike) shows helmet inside rear of car - helmet is against right rear corner of car and facing diagonally downward - appearing like it has been placed there.
c. If statement were true, he would have to be lying with his feet toward the front of the car - or at least lying down with legs toward left side of car.
d. Photo shows law enforcement officer with papers talking with someone (photo only shows partial side of a pale arm in short sleeve and partial outside edge of black shoe/boot).
e. Why is “victim” of accident still lying in back of car after all this time – while law enforcement officer is discussing matters?
f. Ground in photo shows glass and plastic debris, but no tire or rubber debris.
5. Other photo of rear tire shows a lot of wear across entire tire – rubs and scuffs along extreme edge of shoulder.

yeah not really trying to sniff out any bs stories or anything, but i had suspected that the enormous amount of siping might have over heated the tire...like a race rain tire o_O...though i could be wrong.
didnt think it would be an issue due to difference in compound, but maybe coupled with a hot day it was enough? gotta see what happens and how this plays out...

And who took the photo of the crash?
Why were no other photos posted? There had to have been more than that one shot - it's too odd of an angle to be used solely for any insurance or legal purposes. Human nature causes us to take several shots. What do they show?
BTW: Photo properties of the rear tire shred and the odometer photo are way out of sequence. That suggests the odometer photo was NOT taken on the same day.
All of this does not prove the tires did NOT fail. It only pokes holes in the validity of the story and begs other questions to be answered.

I'm running Road 3s right now. They currently have slightly over 3k miles on them. I travel 65 miles a day. 80% of that is at 70mph. I am very happy with the tires thus far. Crossing my fingers for nothing like the above to happen.
Well, if your tire does fail get us some decent pictures, at minimum.
So... I don't see anything wrong with his front tire.
Funny how this is the only shot of the tire he is willing to post - under the guise of showing us the date stamps only. Remember, this is the one he said shredded - his fiance "watched the tire fall to shreds in the rear view mirror as I plowed into her rear end."

The tire looks like it's fine.
I smell something fishy!
And it's not the Michelin man.
HAHA! He finally responded with this:
"Where I previously worked is of no concern. Whether I did a short spat as LEO is of no bearing here.
The tires have JUST UNDER 10,000 miles. I put them on when the bike had 216 miles. The odometer shot was from the previous day because I was going to make a "Broke 10 K" post.
700 Dollars is what my tires cost after installation. I'll scan the receipt from Coast Cycle World as soon as I get home.
I can go on and on refuting your insane conspiracy theory bull****. But here is the reality, I have the tires, the receipt, the accident report, the bike, and anything else anyone deems necessary. I've offered them up several times for Michelin's inspection (as well as ANYONE else that wants to take a look at them).
Let me guess, you are also the same crew behind the "We didn't land on the moon" theory...
LOL Love you long time..."
