OEM foam air filter inserts turned to gum!

So I finally go to pull my carbs for a thorough douching and the whole time I've been thinking it's due to old gas turned to varnish... but when I get the air filter opened up, I notice there is nothing left of the pair of little yellow foam inserts on each of the inlets to the diaphragm areas. Actually there is a bit left, but that dissolves the second you touch it and it turns to a gasoline-stinking gum that feels stronger than polyurethane glue...

I haven't opened the diaphragms yet, carbs are on the workbench now. The whole time it's been running shitty, it's felt to me like the slides weren't sliding smoothly. Probably because they are covered in this gunk, right? I plan on pulling the diaphragms off tonight to adjust shim stacks, so I will know then for sure. But until then, do you think I'm right about this affecting the slides? Or do you think the fact that it's sat for almost two years with only being ridden once that it's clogged jets?

Mine did the same, I have replaced them twice now.

I assume it is the ethanol in the fuel Im forced to run.

I'm sure they did, sir... And I thought the same about the ethanol. But were does this material end up? In the carbs? Were you still running okay?

Im sure it goes through the intake tract, combustion chamber and out the exhaust in some part.. leaving plastic deposits along the way.

Yes, no run ability issues for me, when i noticed them mostly gone. I replaced them again last night, simply because I had a new set on hand, and the one year old set looked a bit,,,,,,,, yellow, thin, and soft.

Thanks for the reply, gives me a little peace of mind... And I just tore into the carbs to clean and install #48 slow jets. Turns out one of the original slow jets was definitely clogged pretty good. Slides seem to be sliding okay, none of the plastic sludge on them

So these can be purchased as separate parts? I didn't know if they came attached to new air filters (which I just bought one of anyway, since I'm in there.)
