New/OLD member to SuperHAwk list
Greetings folks,
I recently joined this board and am enjoying reading what you all have done and learned about your SuperHawks. Let me give you a bit of background on my SH history.
I was on the original SH list at the beggining of 1997 when the most popular thread was "when do you think they'll get here?". Of course they got to our members in Europe first and we learned some things from them, like to clean off the header pipes before firing it up so they don't have blotches on them. Our first shipment in the USA arrived in April, 1997 and I was the proud owner of one of those. I kept that bike until the end of 1999 when my dealer told me he was getting 1 RC51 and I had the first shot at it. I sold my SH to a fellow HSTA (Honda Sport Touring Association) member from another state and got the RC.
While I had the SH, I enjoyed experimenting and modifying it. I think I was the first to put on 94-97 VFR750 bars and it was out of necessity. I was towing the bike to Michigan for a track day in 1998 and was using a Canyon Dancer on my bars. They were the TBR adjustable bars, which were nice, but not as strong as the OEM bars. One of them broke on the way up and I called another HSTA member that was going to the track to see if he had any spare bars. He had a spare VFR750 set as he had changed to Helibars on the VFR. He brought them to the track along with a Dremel and we made the swap. After awhile I lilked them and kept them on.
I had an incident where the VTR fell over into a utility pole while in a grass parking lot at Mid Ohio. My insurance bought me a new tank and I asked a buddy of mine here in IL who owns a body shop to modify my dented tank. He took out the dent, split it horizontally and put in a new section and made it into a larger tank, about 5 gallons. The hardest part was matching the Honda red. I also was the first on the old list to chrome the wheels and really liked the way that brightened up the looks of the bike. Craig Erion made me a special 14 inch pair of carbon cans, which I liked a lot. I had Lindeman Engineering rebuild the forks and I put on a Fox twin clicker.
I got one of the first Sargent World Sport seats and didn't like it at all. I then carved my stock seat foam and sent it to Sargent along with my stock seat and asked them to build me one like that. They liked it and asked if they could build me a World Sport seat like that and send it to me free for evaluation. Of course, I took them up on that and they later changed their design to the contours I gave them and that is what they are selling today.
I added several other farkles and really loved the bike and it was difficult to sell it for the RC51. I enjoyed the RC as it was faster, smoother, had better brakes and handling, better range with the fuel injection and larger tank and was an all around better bike for brisk riding or track days. On the other hand, it didn't have the pleasant character of the SH and wasn't as pleasant for sport touring.
I'll try to shorten this a bit by telling you that recently I was able to buy my old SH back and I am very, very happy to have it back home. I have about 10 other bikes at the time and they all serve a purpose, but the SuperHawk has to be one of the friendliest, most fun bikes to ride that I have ever had.
Sorry for the long post, but I thought you might enjoy hearing of my background. It is interesting to read what else you guys have come up with in the 5+ years that I have been out of the loop.

Always good to hear from our forebears & get a history lesson. Just got my 1st SH in October. Have put almost 3K on it so far, so it's not gatherin' dust. Now when the good weather gets here...

Re: New/OLD member to SuperHAwk list
Greetings,
Thanks for the welcome.
Farkle is a term I learned on a few other bike related lists and generally means an addition to a bike. My heated grips, hugger, radar amp would be considered farkles, for instance.
Some of the sport touring lsits, like the ST1100, ST1300 lists I have been on are big into farkles. I have heard that at some of their rallies they even have bragging rights for "most Farkled Bike".

Greetings Fred!
The Super Hawk is quite the great ride. An accomplished rider friend of mine has been a Super Hawk believer since the first shipment to the states, and he was the one who turned me onto it.
Anyways, thanks for the intro and look forward to seeing you around the board.

With this kit you can use whatever grips you prefer. I also ran the power through a relay so the switch is only powered when the key is on.

Hey Fred!
I remember you from the old list. Your last name Ziggler? (remember Scott Winders?!) We share many parallels. I think I signed up for the old sport-twin list in Dec of 96. I couldn't get my first 98 until July of 97 having to "endure" all you guys talking about your new awesome rides. I too sold mine a few years later, regretting the decision, and stating that I would have another one some day. Well, that someday was last fall when I picked up another 98.
Thanks for "pioneering" the VFR bars back then. I enjoy them today. Please share any more you come up with. I've done that and have more to follow.
Welcome back, I know I'm glad to be back. The SuperHawk just makes me smile everytime I ride it. 8)

Welcome. Don't apologize for the long post, it was very interesting and cool to read. I'm in the middle of the VFR clip on installation as we speak, just doing the braided lines so they fit. Also, I got a Sargent seat for xmas so my *** will owe you thanks as well as my wrists.
You got any more tips for my other body parts?

Hi Doug,
You are close, the name is spelled Ziglar. Oh, man, I forgot all about Scott and enjoyed forgetting about him. Uh....he isn't on this list is he???
What is your last name? I think I remember you from "The Olde List", but a few clues would help. Where are you in Texas? I will be heading for TX this weekend to race one of my vintage Bultaco Dirt bikes in a AHRMA national at Jefferson. That is another of my passions lately. I have been retired for 2 years and am enjoying being a full time Professional Motorsickle Bum.
Good to hear from you,

Hi NOrrTH,
Glad you enjoyed reading some of the blather. I don't think I have any more body part comfort related tips. One thing I have to do is put a throttle lock on it for those long stretches of straight road when you just have to ride them. I tried a Vista Cruise that I had here as I thought that is what I had back then. It hits the large tank, though and won't work. I wonder if it worked with the VFR bars? I'll find out soon.
The forks I had were rebuilt by Lindeman Engineering and they helped. The previous owner had another set rebuilt by Traxxion Dynamics and they are o nthere now and very nice, so that adds to the comfort factor. The Fox Twin Clicker also helps the ride.
The full story on my "new" VTR is that the guy who bought it from me in Sept 99 liked it the first time he saw it and told me he would buy it whenever I was ready to sell. He already had a 98 SH , which he kept when he bought mine. After he bought mine, he rode it into Mexico and got into an accident and lowsided on the left side. He had it hauled back to Arkansas, then the insurance Co totalled it. He kept the bike and took it to his dealer along with his original SH. He told them to repair or replace the damaged parts from my bike and use his SH to build one just like it. So, the bike I bought back has all the neat upgrades I did and it has 10,000 less miles on it than when I sold it to him. It also always ran a bit smoother than mine, so I'm really pleased with that. The only thing I have noticed so far is that it gets worse mileage than mine did. With my big tank, I would usually get the RLOD around 130-140 miles and with that tank on the new bike, it is coming on about 115. That is distraeeing and I will have to check it out to see if he jetted it too rich or what?
When I had my original one, I bought a Factory jet kit and took it to a buddy that has a dyno and works on bikes. He has done great jobs on several other bikes. Somewhere around 1995 or 1996 Craig Erion of TBR featured a full page article and pictures of my 95VFR in his catalog. This is guy dyno tuned it with TBR pipes. Anyway, when he experimented with the SH, he tried the Factory kit and didn't like the results. He ended up shimming the needles and we got great results. I think we were the frist to try that mod also. I think I may take this bike to him and let him go thru it and run it on the dyno and see what we have. Perhaps the gas is much worse that it was 5 or 6 years ago, but with my 5+ gallon tank, I should have a lot bettter range.
It is interesting to read that you all have identified the CCT as a weak link. I know a few HSTA members that had major engine problems and this was surely the cause. The guy that bought my RC51 had his SH engine rebuilt under the extended warranty after problems like that. I have ordered a set of the manual adjusters that I saw mentioned on this forum.

Re: New/OLD member to SuperHAwk list
I don't think you have to worry about Scott Winders coming back to a "lowly" VTR ever again. I'm sure God's Gift To Motorcycling is in MotoGP now or running one of the teams (heavy, heavy sarcasm)!
My last name is Smith but I wasn't real prolific poster then as I was new to the 'net and there were plenty of "characters" on that list keeping things going, if you know what I mean. Unfortunately, we have now lost TWO sets of archives (zikzak and runlevelzero).
I think a pic of your 4th gen VFR is still on the Texas VFR garage site.

Nope, get an NEC. BTDT.
Thanks, Doug. Seems like I also saw a NEC in my box of leftover parts. Must have been where I used it.
Yeah, I'm sure that Scott made the Big Time, heh, heh.
