Hey everybody.

I've been lurking for a few weeks after pretty much deciding that the superhawk is going to be my next bike. Currently I'm in Iraq and will be in the looking for a good used one when I get home. I do have a couple of questions though that I can't seem to find answers to here for some reason.

Is there a list of differences between years? If I'm not mistaken they're all pretty much the same with the exception of a larger fuel tank and some dash upgrades for the later year models.

For the money I'll have available It looks like I'll be in the late 90's range. If I read right on the fuel tank thing is it difficult to retrofit a newr superhawk tank on an older model for a few extra miles? I don't plan to get crazy with a VFR mod for a tank, but if it's basiclly a bolt on thing I'd be more than up for it.

Anyway, I'm lookin forward to what looks to be a great bike and continuing to keep up with the goings on here on the forum

Junyr.. where ya at in Iraq, I’m currently up near Sadr City..

The fuel tanks on US models are all the same, only non US SH got the larger tank. VTR tank MOD is a lot more then bolt on and go. Truth is, for most I think the range of the tank fits the range of the *** sitting on the seat. I ride 100-120 miles and stop for fuel, coffee or drink take a ****, and ride on.

In general, other than colors and the digital dash of the later years all the SH models as are the same.
When you headed home.. give us a month, if you can.. PM or post an address..... and we could send you for sale ads as we find um.

I'm in the Air National Guard and have roughly a week or so left here in Balad, Iraq.

As far as the bike goes I live in Des Moines, Iowa and use craigshelper.org to help me scan quickly through craigslist for them. So far for the late 90's bikes I'm seeing $2500 - $3500 with the occational $2k if it's been laid over or has extremely high miles.

I'm lookiing forward to spring!

Very cool.. were on about the same time line.. I should be back in Texas by end of DEC.

$2000 ~$3000 is about right, for $3000 or more it better be in near perfect shape, low miles and have some add ons... The bike is not a niche deal, many undervalue it, so used prices are low, add time of year and the economy, and prices are lower.

Craigs list, this forum, local ads all good choices. Best of luck, let us know what you find.

Welcome.

Differnces between models ae minimal. Euro models got the larger tank in 2001, which bolts staright on with the later model fuel tap and hoses to the carbs. Will be hard to find in the US I think.

Again maybe I just suck at searching forums...

Is there PDF of a superhawk manual linked on here anywhere?

Welcome to you and be safe. I am an ex-Security Police that was based in Minot but now in the NYC area.

As for a SH, there are some here for sale that I am sure can be worked out. I have found the expertise here awesome when it comes to all sportbikes, not just the SH.

I'd look here before going to Craigslist or Ebay, of course. The folks who use this forum typically have a better understanding of the bike and the best upgrades than people who just own the SH for a season, then sell it off.

It is a LOT of machine for the money. I don't think 2.5k will buy you even a decent F3, but that's the meaty middle when it comes to SH.

Safe travels, Chip. -- Randy

Buying a hawk

I went the cheaper $ route, but now wished I would have bought a well modded bike in the $4K range than the well used bike in the low $2K range. Can't beat the bang for the buck though on the price I paid.

If you are going to keep the bike awhile. You'll want to do mods. It is much much cheaper to buy them already on the bike. Personally I would look for a SH with a later model front end and brakes, upgraded regulator, Apes CCTs, aftermarket light, etc. already on. You'll wish you had them later and want to upgrade. Still can't buy a better all around bike for $2-3K , if you find one stock you want.

Funny now I find bikes I always dreamed of owning 20 years ago for like $2K. Old Ninja 1000s, FJ1200s, , GXR1100s, CBR1000 Hurricanes, V65 Sabres. I look at those bikes now, and wonder why I ever wanted them. I'd hate to being going 50 mph into a 30 mph corner on any of them. I remember when the Hurricane 1000s first came out. I thought I would never want a bike with that much power, or looked that fast, I thought, who would ever want to go 160 mph on a bike?

Ah, so true Torque Junkie. God knows...

When the VTR came out I had a FJ1200 and had gotten badly burned by my jerk friend and a$$hole brother on a Ducati 900CR and CRB F3 respectively. It's taken me 10 years to get the bike I wanted to rub their faces in the dirt then, and now my buddy is into bicycles and my brother has a Buell, so where's the justice in that?

I'm sure I'm missing the zen in this moment, but GRRRRRR.
