need opinions on an ebay bike
New baby means the 954 is going bye-bye; need a cheaper bike. Found this on ebay, what do you guys think? What questions I should ask the guy?I've had hankerin' for a hawk for awhile. I'd have to add about $600 shipping. I don't suppose anyone in the area could have a look at it for me?

Re: need opinions on an ebay bike
I'd ask a lot of questions about the condition. what maintainence, and when it was done. Ask for a pic of the title and the frame VIN. Check shipping with forwardair.com, it may be cheaper.
Look at the bike: start at the front wheel working your way to the back while pondering questions. Go slow and you'll find you will have a bunch by the time you are done!
It "looks" like a stunt bike to me.

Yeah, I know the usual questions but I meant superhawk specific I guess, not that I'd know if the answer was honest anyway...
I didn't think anybody really used these for stunters. I'm always leery of buying bikes on the net but I'm not finding any good deals in my area. I'll question the guy but I may keep looking. Thanks.

Re: need opinions on an ebay bike
I bought mine on eBay last October. '98 w/ 6700 miles for $4000.
My tips:
1) Be patient. A lot of good 'Hawks are out there for around $4k.
2) 18,000 plus miles...I'd look for one w/ 10k or less.
3) Polished...could be a poser...or it could have some hardcore miles on it. Ideally I'd try to find a stock bike being sold by a guy about my age (no, mine's NOT for sale).
Disclaimer: Some guys my age will ride the hell out of these bikes & take them to track days, out on the backroads, in the mountains & canyons. (Woohoo!) Thus finding a stock bike w/ the original fenders & all is your best bet.
4) L@@K! AWESOME - this always gets my sceptic radar system up & running.
5) I'd establish a distance you're willing to go to look at/ pick up the bike. I wanted a place I could get to in 8 hours or less. (see #1 above)
6) Cam Chain Tensioner (CCT) failure can be a problem on these bikes; Honda design flaw. See threads in this Forum.
7) Cooling system leakage. There's a "weep hole" on the right front of the engine. They went to a hose to replace the weep hole in later years. Look for excessive coolant (usually green) weeping out. My '98 has some, but it's minimal & I understand this often goes away with age. Other times it gets worse.

Re: need opinions on an ebay bike
Yeah, I've decided against this one. $4K is too much right now. 3 year old + pregnant wife + f2 track bike=no expensive street bike. I watched my 954 go bye-bye last night and now I need something for less than $3k. I guess I'll probably just settle for an f2 or f3, unless I can find a hawk that needs some work closer to me. Thanks for the advice.

Re: need opinions on an ebay bike
I have had one short ride on a hawk and I enjoyed it. I actually had forgotten about that. I like vtwins but the clutch kills me. I've spent some time on an rc51; loved the motor hated the clutch, but I don't remember having a problem w/ the hawk clutch... was mostly highway though. I'll keep looking; I might be going for a vfr as well. Thanks.
