Yeah, 99's were yellow. Ask if its been painted. Thge black ones were within the last 2 years I believe. If it has been painted, it may have been dumped at some point.
Just check the bike over with a fine tooth comb and look for any signs of repairs. Or any parts that look much newer then other parts, ie - case covers, pegs, etc. Also, run a small magnet over the gas tank, if there are any spots that the magnet doesn't stick- there's bondo under the paint.
If it was down, that doesn't mean its still not a good bike, just check it out good. Take it for a good ride and go from there.

check the date of manufactuer on the side of the frame, next to the VIN. It may have been MADE in 99, but was probably sold as a 2000 model. I believe the 2000's were black.
