hello to forum members

hi to everyone on forum.i thought i would introduce myself to everyone as a new member to this forum.i have a 98' superhawk i bought from an insurance auction in the thoughts of building a racebike for supertwins class up here in minnesota.i race a SV650 already, love those v-twins.i don't know if it would make a good racebike or not? so if anybody has any input i'm all ears.i'm no Valentino Rossi but i can get around a track pretty good.like i said, hi to all and looking forward to input from people who know these bikes way better than i do.

I don't know if you race at BIR but it would be a hoot to drive on a Superhawk. The secret to the Superhawk is its power. If you know the track you can select the gears that will put you in your powerband every time. I think if you ran a stock front sprocket and went to a 43 in the rear you would be perfect. We used to camp on the final turn before the bridge to the main straight. Love those big right hand sweepers. Last time I was there Paul Newman came in third.

Most of the tracks that the bikes run here are shorter and more intricate than BIR. The one that's closest to me is shaped like an hourglass. That's good for the Superhawk because without taller gears it's going to be eaten on long straights. At the end of the day it's how well you can use the machine to come back on the back half. While they're shifting their asses off you're blowing through in one or two gears.

Good luck and enjoy the ride.

hi "nuhawk, yes i race for the CRA here, but unfortunetly i had two neck operations this summer so i missed whole year of racing and street riding.it really sucked.
back in Paul Newman days that's awhile ago, they added a short course to the track last year really fun now we have two courses to use.
yeah i picked up a 98' hawk on thoughts of running it in supertwins race and formula40 race(i'm 45 years old) i always liked the VTR thought they looked better than RC51 myself, just my opionion even though it's not as racey as RC51.i race a SV650 now in lightwieght supersport/superbike not tryin' to sound like a fast guy or anything but i can hold my own on the track.i'll look into your gearing suggestion, going to try and get it built during long cold winter,so i thought this forum would be great to learn from guys who know these bikes way better than me,like yourself.thanks for the welcoming, take care. Welcome!

Just a suggestion, depending on your weight, get the suspension sorted... The stock front is too weak and the rear is to harsh (not matching each other!)

Get a fully adjustable rear shock, it's worth the extra money to be able to adjust height since you are going racing... And either swap out the fork or get springs/GW for you weight...

thanks "tweety" definately will do that.going with pensky shock out back i love mine in my SV650 and racetech the front.any experience with raising or lowering forks in tripples and effects on this bike? quickening up steering is good and all but brainered is such a fast track i'm all about stability through turns 1 & 2 if anybody out there knows what i'm talking about.very fast turns.how about brakes? my stock SV rotors and carbon loraine pads are unbelieveable, how are VTR brakes? i've never even rode this bike yet.like i said bought at auction put in garage.now i'm staring at it thinking what mods i need to make.then go to a couple of track days in spring to get use to it.any way "svensk stryka" tweety hope to chat with you again

My shock is shimmed and I tinkered with raising the forks. I found a spot a really liked (about 3/4") but then I started dragging the header on right turns. Tore the wrap to shreds before I realized it. I have now lowered them a little (1/2"). I haven't had a chance yet to see if it helped with the dragging. This may or may not directly relate to other bikes because of weight and suspension set-up and probably some other factors. This is just my experience. I also have a steering damper so stability wasn't a big concern. It always felt rock solid.

Well... If you listen to me, this is going to cost you... Click on the image in my sig to find out why...

But in all honesty if you are above 160 lbs in weight the stock fork is not an option for a track bike... If you are doing a good build for riding twisty back roads, then upgrading the stock fork is a viable option...

For a race bike, I would unbolt it at the steering neck and chuck it in the bin... The springs and valving in stock form is for a 130 lbs Japanese midget... Combined with a rear spring for 2-up riding... Well...

The stock brakes are OK, but they are severely handicapped by a completely undersized master cylinder...

As I said, for a track bike (and racing!) I'd suggest doing a swap to a CBR fork... 929/954/1000RR and RC-51 forks will bolt straight up using the 929/954 triples... including a lighter wheel and beefier brakes it will give you a stouter fork... Then have that one set for your weight... Search around and you will find several of these projects in the forum... Including my completely rebuilt bike... I have a severe tinkering problem... As soon as the roads ice over here I start taking stuff apart...

A common problem with dropping the front/raising the fork tubes, is that you tend to do what mboe did, drag the header... From my experience I'd recommend cranking the rear up instead, and just adjust a little in the front... You can change the geometry rather a lot as the VTR in stock is a bit lazy in the turns...

Oh, and as said... If you are moderately sane... Don't listen to me... My little project lost any semblance of sane long ago...

BTW... Hur mycket svenska förstår du?

Not much I'm thinking tweety, I understand none and had to use an online translator for both, and your's is the only one that made any sense.

hålla SHINEY uppåt och tja .. u know,

Oh, and WELCOME to the forum, you'll be here a lot.

His made sense as a direct translation... The problem here is that the Swedish language and English uses inversive grammar... Ie directly translated "Hur mycket Svenska förstår du?" means "How much Swedish understand you" (or similar) but correct grammar would be "How much Swedish do you understand?"

Same way... "Keep the shiney side up" is kind of useless in a direct translation...

As a good translation in terms of a usable expression that means the same, I'd use either "Skramlar det så ramlar du!" which means close too "If it's screeching, you'll fall" or "Håll dig på banan!" which is the Swedish version of "Keep between the ditches!"

thanks tweety i was concidering a fork swap, but have to check rule book to see if it's class legal.i'll have to check out your bike, sounds awesome.
i use to know how to speak a little Swedish with my grandpa and some norwiegen with my grandma.it's been a while though.
for "stebbdt" i said to tweety "swedish power". translation "svensk" swedish, "stryka" power.like tweet said it's kind of hard getting a good translation between the two especially for me since i haven't spoke it in a long time, but he can correct me if i'm wrong he's deffinately more of an expert on both sujects than i am.but i'm looking forward to talking with tweet. i'm gonna brush up on my Swedish

Pics have to be on the internet, not your computer. You can upload into your gallery on this site then link to them.

To link to them you need the address of the pic, either from the bar, or right click and select properties, then copy the addy.

Then you can use [ img ] and [ /img ] tags, and they will be in your post. Some guys use the attach function, and the thumbnails show up.
