They filter the air displaced by the carb diaphragms moving up and down.

 

so those small yellow foam triangles are secondary air filters. they help catch fine particles that might get through the main filter. it's good you ordered new ones, because they wear out and lose effectiveness over time. with the new foam, your engine will run better and stay cleaner.
