ElectroSport Industries Stator
I hate to sound like a newb, but what does this item do? From my understanding, it's an alternator.

Yep it's umm 1/2 of an alternator. Together with the R/R make a complete one.
On cars the R/R is attached / built into the alternator, along with the stator. On a motorcycle, for packaging and size reasons, they are separated.
