Consistant 45MPG (+) on road trips
Hello,
So, I just completed my second roadtrip/tour on the SuperHawk. The first one was to Death Valley National Park, appx 1800 miles roundtrip. The best mileage I got was 46mpg.
I just got back from a loop through the Sierras. Totally different terrain. I still got 46mpg.
But in the City traffic and sport riding through the canyons and twisties in the Bay Area I get an okay mid-30's mpg.
I do ride pretty aggressive. No need to expand on that statement. I am curious what is the best that you folks get on long trips. These numbers do make a difference when planing for a long trip. I need to think about fuel at about 100 miles. And my fuel light comes on at around 130 miles.

Have you checked your speedo for accuracy?
Those are the same numbers I usually get too, but in the city I have seen as low as 30 before. So cruising top gear tucked in I can get 45mpg. So its not the mpgs on these bikes its the small tank. Think of the possibilities of a 5 gallon tank.
Best I ever got was 42, and that was with stock exhaust and carbs untouched from the factory. I got 40 mpg pretty consistently when I was commuting on the freeway.
Since installing slip-ons a year and a half ago, and doing carb work, the best I've gotten is 40, and high 30's are the norm. Lowest is about 35. I'm not complaining though.
My low fuel light flashes at around 100 miles, plus or minus.

I noticed that when my bike was stock I was right at 40 MPG and now after the Can swap and the carb set up 8541Hawk recomended (with the rear cylinder still running rich) I am at 45 to 47MPG on the hwy (left elbow on the tank as comfy as I can get) and back to 38.7 to 40.2 in the twisties before my reseve bar starts flashing.
What am I doing wrong?
Man, my bike runs super smooth. Engine all stock. Gas mileage is mid to low 30's. I don't know how you guys are getting such high mpg? Even on my comute to work I average maybe 33-35 mpg. In the twisties? really low? had the fuel light come on at 77 miles from a full tank.
Ok going to install some new sparks plugs and airfilter, turn in the mixture screws another 1/4 turn, re-balance carbs and see if it gets better?

My record for the RLOD (red light of death for you new guys) is right at 70 miles.
I was able to get it up to the low-mid 40's once..... but that was on a newbie ride hearding new riders through the Santa Cruz Mtns. On that day I never took the bike over 3.5K and got great mileage. So like I said, it's all in how you twist the throttle and for me I guess I just like to give it a good twist most of the time....
I was getting only around 30+ on a good day before and rld was at 80 on tank. I did 3 things (dunno which actually helped) I changed from using premium gas to regular, new tires, and switched out the r/r from stock to mosfet r1. now I am consistantly getting around 46 and rld doesnt come on till around 105- 115. probably would do more if didn't have dent in tank lol.
I just went through a bottle of an enzyme-type fuel treatment and it yielded about 10-13 mile per tank increase. Interestingly, it didn't improve for the first few weeks of use, possibly cleaning orifices, etc.
Now using the empty bottle to add an ounce of motor or 2 cycle oil to the gas tank during fill-ups and maybe will alternate this with enzyme-type fuel treatment.
So far, mileage is up to previous, i.e., 128 miles to warning light. (Fuel up to rim)

I am a newbie to this forum and I have to chuckle. 30+ seems pretty good. I had a modified zx12R previously and if I was having any fun at all it was into the mid 20s in a heart beat. It had a 5+ gallon tank and I could hardly make 130 miles if I was feeling frisky. With a fresh tank of premium and driving like a grandma it would get over 45... But I think we all know hard how it is to NOT crack the throttle on any fun bike.
I used mine to commute for a few years (mostly highway) and averaged anywhere from 38 - 42 depending on traffic. Like Inderocker I did one tank of gas at the posted limit. MPG went up to something like 45 or 47. I'll never do it again. Most boring F*@king ride ever. Keep the couple extra miles, I'd rather have fun riding.
Get a decent tank bag you can lean forward on so you drop a bit lower and out of the wind. Tucked in a bit makes a surprising difference. For longer runs keep a bottle of fuel in the tank bag (better yet in your buddy's tank bag!).
