CCT survey

Yes, I've searched first (!).

Just wondered if anyone had done a survey to simply find out what years pose the biggest trend for CCT failures...or for that matter, what mileage?

If you want to throw in your info, I'll build some data to show year / miles / OEM or APE and post this once I can see sufficient info that forms a trend. It sure would help in my decision making to go APE or not. Maybe it will help others...

All I need is;

2000, OEM, 13,000 kms.

Or whatever...let me know...

Syclone 03-21-2010 11:50 AM

I don't know that any certain years pose more threat than others, but I replaced my OEMs with Truck's manual ones last year, 1998 w/ 20k miles.

AngryOlaf 03-21-2010 11:58 AM

Have an '00 with stock CCTs... about 16,800 miles.

I do also have some APEs ready to install though when I do my (now overdue) valve inspection. This forum has made me paranoid! :)

I don't think year of production has anything to do with it. My '03, which I bought new, developed front cylinder cam chain rattle before 5k miles. Without the rattle, I never would have worried about it. I spent a bit over $100 for APE's to make it go away.

If you've got the rattle, or you're just worrying about it, you'd be a fool not to spend a big, fat, friggin' $100-$120 and forget about it.

2003, oem with almost 17000 miles.

8541Hawk 03-21-2010 01:24 PM

1998 OEM, changed the first set out at 60k miles and replaced them with OEM units, now at 80K miles.....

Don't slam the throttle shut at high RPM or let it sit and idle on the side stand and the stock units will last for a while...

slabm7 03-21-2010 02:13 PM

1999, 36000kms, Stock CCT's but have a set of APE's in the mail and should be here any day, plan to change them out before the summer hits. From reading about the failures on the forum it seems like cheap insurance considering I want to keep this bike for alot of years to come.

1998, OEM, 27,000 mi ~ 43000 km

crackerjackman 03-21-2010 02:28 PM

98' with almost 30k. Just did the APE swap on mine. The stockers were rattlin like a mofo. And yes after reading al about other members horrible CCT failures and having the top end having to be rebuilt after thet went on them, I got me a set. IMHO its the only way to go if you do alot of high RPM riding, twisties, etc.

Oh and When I did my swap I noticed that the valve train was alot quieter. Hope that heps others decide to spend the money on them. I paid 104.95 shipped.

NCDave 03-21-2010 02:33 PM

99, OEM, 18k miles.

ascothawk 03-22-2010 07:21 AM

98,replaced with oem at 35,000 miles. 65,500 on bike now.

jbeber 03-22-2010 07:40 AM

I just replaced my stock CCTs yesterday with some APEs....it's a 1998 with about 28,000 miles...quite a noticeable difference in engine noise...I'll probably ride it more often now that I'm not worried about a breakdown and likely repair costs!

residentg 03-22-2010 07:51 AM

2005 - 9,600 miles. I am replacing my OEM CCTs with APEs now since I have everything apart to do the PAIR removal and TPS adjustment. I should look at the valves too, even though I have another 6,400 miles before that is due. JB

nick.p0306 03-22-2010 07:59 AM

psyclown 03-22-2010 08:09 AM

99, OEM, failed at 28,000

Stixx 03-22-2010 08:39 AM

03, oem, 25634 miles

dvwalker 03-22-2010 08:47 AM

98' and changed CCT's at 34k. Had really bad chain rattle which made me park it for a few weeks till the Tuck's CCT's came in. Now runs smooth with not noise at all.

Stevebis1 03-22-2010 10:06 AM

'99 still OEM 11,500 miles

Truck is out of the CCT business. He moved on to other things (As 20yr olds do)

01SuperChicken 03-22-2010 02:05 PM

I read about the stock CCTs going out about 5k miles ago...when I hear the rattle...or decide I have some $ to spare...I'll upgrade to APEs. Until then....ride on and keep the rubber on the pavement! Two down!!! 8-)

skokievtr 03-22-2010 02:31 PM

the definitve CCT thread

https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...ad.php?t=11275

BTW, on my fast red 98 50k mile major I put in the APEs

jbaxx 03-22-2010 02:54 PM

Installed Trucker's CCT's on my '03 at 15k mi as preventive maintainance. No issues.

Denverhawk 03-23-2010 02:52 PM

98 OEM 18K

superbikemike 03-23-2010 04:28 PM

98 OEM 20K Miles

RWhisen 03-23-2010 04:49 PM

A little over 4000 miles and I have the APEs sitting on my toolbox for installation once I get back from delivering an airplane to Afghanistan.

lazn 03-23-2010 05:47 PM

In my unofficial, purely guestimate, based solely on feeling, opinion. There is probably a less than 10% chance of your CCTs failing.

But, APE ccts are only a $110 investment and they prevent a $2000 rebuild.

You buy insurance for the bike for more than that per year.
