It came home with me....
It came home with me....
1998 VTR1000F, 8382 miles on it, paid $3500. Took it to the shop after work the very next day for inspection and a good once over to see what its issues are...
a older fella behind the service counter says "may I help you"
The service guy was very well schooled on the VTR and he really treated me well. He went out of his way to let me know he's going to take good care of the bike, and me since I am in the military. I am never one to ask for discounts because of my military job... but when offered, its appreciated.
After taking it for a ride and saying it needs some work...he mentioned they are so busy now, it will have to wait till sept 1st before they could get to it....
I mentioned I was deploying soon and I am in no hurry anyway, could I just leave it... they could get to it when they could.... he said "sure"
he said while they have it they are going to do a state inspection, carb rebuild and tune, change the air filter, rear tire, oil change, flush the brake and clutch fluids, make me a spare key and give it a top to bottom, side to side safety and reliability inspection for me.
He even said he'll fill the tank, add sta-bil to it and deliver it to my garage for me while I am gone. He said " I want it to be ready for you when you come home, hit the key and hit the streets"
I said, thats all good, but I am not looking to spend more in repairs than what I paid for the bike@!!!!
he smiled and said " hey, I said I'd take care of you... wait a few while I run the parts and figure labor... got get a soda and look at some accessories..
When he gave me the estimate, I was shocked and said " thats really a hell of a discount, I appreciate all the discounts, but I don't want you to get into trouble with the boss"
his reply " then I'd be in trouble with myself if that were the case", so there I was, dealing with the owner of one of the biggest cycle shops in the area.
I agreed to leave it with them for the summer as I am due to deploy soon for a few months to yet another armpit of the world.
So I trailered it home for one night, unloaded it the next day at the dealer and thats about it.
I dont even have any friggin pics of it!
sorry if my story caused a few folks to get bored and slit thier wrists...

I'd like to think I am "just doing my job"... discounts are nice, but I never ask...... makes me feel as if i am a beggar or something...

"No not Detroit, anywhere but Detroit"
that's from "Kentucky Fried Movie".
Seriously, come back safe and enjoy your new ride. I have the deepest respect for you guys. I live in the town that is the next door neighbor to Camp Pendleton.

Sounds like a great deal. It's good to see people take care of our military folks like this. Lord knows we need it in this country.
Have a safe trip there and back. Come home to your bike and RIDE!

Most of the time these older guys that reach out to servicemen and women either have been there or have been close to it. I was close to it. Either way they understand the sacrafice and the importance of the mission.
Godspeed, write often, we will return the favor. While you can't ride we can freshen your day with the air of our last ride. We all look forward to your return. You buy lunch at the next ride.
Well, being a aircraft mechanic, I sure don't have the same kind of work as those walking the streets and kicking in doors. But being away from home feels the same whether its your first or fourth ( mine) trip "over there"....
I really didnt try to turn this in to a thread about me and my service, i enjoy doing it and I can't thing of anything i'd rather do (unless i won the lottery, then I coud think of many other things).... I do appreciate yur support!
Thanks again.....
So,I guess i did fairly well on my purchase? What else should I have them do while they have the bike for the summer? should I just have them do the cct's? cush drive? or are those two things that are easy enough to do? I have a well equipped garage and all winter long when i get back...
Thanks again fellas....
