black smoke on take off....

would like to hear some sugestions before i tear into my bike. every time i nail the throttle a very large plum of black smoke blows out both my mufflers. i never really worried about it but my buddies said it was very noticable the other nite. does anybody elses bike do this? should i try to lean this thing out a little? or should i not worry ?

my bike does not do this, it has almost 17,000 miles on it.....pretty sure it's not normal.

Re: black smoke on take off....

how about dropping the needles a notch, or running it with out the air filter and see if it still does it?

Since you are "throttling up" from an idle it would likely be that your idle circuit is too rich. I would bet your plugs are completely black. Either the pilot screw setting or pilot jets. More likely your pilot jets are too rich. I had a similar problem and had to drop down from a 50 to a 45 to get it sorted out properly.
You should take care of it since running it over rich will continually build carbon and reduce engine lifespan.

Re: black smoke on take off....

rc996, it only puffs one quck shot of black smoke as i hit the throttle to wide open. i had a 78 trans am that was built for the strip that used to do that but that thing had a 900 quadrabog that was built for the strip. so the needles are just held in place by pressure fit? i thought i read somewhere you had to turn the holder to the left to release them, but since you guys take your carbs apart on what seems to be a daily basis, i thought i would ask....thanx

42 or 43 is stock, if I recall.
The PO got into the carbs and really messed things up. After a couple of changes and dyno runs I got it setup right.
