Big Love:looking to add a second

Bike, that is The wife tells me the other day after a 3 hr ride on the Hawk she wants me to buy something a little more suited to two up riding.Being a Honda man through and through I show her pics of a CBR1100XX Blackbird (sorry,im just not ready for an ST or Goldwing)and to my shock she says"buy one"

After I recovered from this rare "permission before forgiveness moment",I found a super clean 2003 model at the right price. What I'm wondering is does anyone here have experience with these bikes or can give me any advice?

The bike has a solid rep. Heavy but lots of power, super smooth engine, gas mileage usually isn't great (in touring terms) but with the wife as passenger it should be much better than one up (heh, heh). It's a honda so watch the R/R and CCT's.

Interceptor is not an option? ST's are really cool and really a marvel of engineering. Truly Honda stuff all the way. What a cool gift. An ST went through my local dealer last winter, two years old, 8000 miles and the DEALER wanted $8900. Had lots of factory warranty left so I don't know what happened but it was a perfect steal. Good luck with your quest. Really nice machine that appeals to me and the two up riders is the Triumph Sprint STs. Hate to muddy the water but I have done it for myself several times.

Yea, I've got a good wife also, who allows me to have multiple umm, bikes. But unlike you, she's not so crazy about riding on the SH. She's been riding pillion on my 1800 Goldwing for 5 years, and she's not so crazy about sitting up in the wind with nothing to hold onto.
FWIW, I LOVE my wing, and that thing seriously halls ***, for a 900 pound bike, of course. I'll scrape pegs all day long at the gap, unless she's hitting me on the helmet for going too fast.
Good luck, and welcome to the multiple bike crowd. Now you'll have to decide which bike to take out on every ride.

There is mention of a guy that lives in the area of Deals that regularly runs down sportbike riders on his 'Wing and passes them. Scaping foot boards and all but totally unmustered.

I saw a Blackbird up close a couple weeks ago and it's just a big CBR. Very big CBR! I would want to do a comparison ride between the Interceptor, the ST and the Blackbird before I dropped the coin to own any of them. The cops that don't ride BMW's here, ride ST's. I had one of them tell me, "There's nothing that can out run me." I don't doubt that the CBR can't do that - it can't do that without sounding like her hairdryer.

dpenix76, I own a 97 xx with 8400 mils on it. Right now its located in Beaufort NC. Was thinking on letting it go but not sure. The bike isn't imported in the states anymore but is in europe. Honda didn't want to push the 200mph mark like the others. Even they stoped. (suzuki and Kawi) At least is looks that way.

It is an awsome bike, very smooth with dubble counter ballancers. A little heavy about 575lbs. With the Erion exhuast makes +150hp ! Extremly fast! Linked brakes some like some don't. I think it did +180mph in 97, you should be able to confirm this with out to much troubble.

good luck

You will both be happier with a FJR because she is going to tell you the passenger accomodations aren't hardly any different from the Superhawk and you will be riding in basically the same position as the Superhawk on a Blackbird.

The new FJR has Abs standard, a great riding position, good passenger accomodations with good wind protection (electric adjust windshield) and with 145 hp (around 121 rear wheel) is all the excitement you are going to need 2 up and solo is actually quicker and faster than the Superhawk although it doesn't beat the Superhawk on top end by much and doesn't have the character of the Superhawk.

Get a FJR and she will be happy, you will like all the comfort and torque riding 2 up on a Supersport Tourer and you will still have your light, fun, quick Superhawk for entertainment. FJR is about 80 lbs. lighter than a ST and not much heavier than a Blackbird with a lot more comfort.

You can find a great deal on a FJR.

I got to spend about 1/2 day on an '06 FJR and it is indeed a wonderful ST with gobs o' torque (100ft/lbs!) but....

I bet this second bike search is greatly ruled by $$$ and used blackbirds are pretty cheap relatively speaking. IIRC, the latter ones are FI if that makes a difference.

I put heli bars on my xx and converbars on my st3. With convertibars the differacne is quite alot, much better by about 4". So don't let the way the bike was built keep you from getting what you want. I would have put the convertibars on the xx if they wre availble when I installed the heli's. But its not too late and I might just do that also.

However it made the st3 the way I want it and I couldn't find a L twin that I liked at the time I got the duck.

Your right 'bling money is a factor in this purchase, but I have also always loved the look of the blackbird.

From reading on the Blackbird forum, seems a lot of guys are using VFR bars on their birds ,just like some here have on their Hawks.

Yup, I sold two pairs to those guys at about $125-150/pair. Note: only VTEC 43mm work.
