in other than a full tuck position? The stocker directs the wind blast right at my head. (5'9").

What is the high pitched whine that comes and goes with rpm changes? gears?

You're probably hearing those huge carbs sucking in air. Very normal. The sound grows on you after a while and it makes other bikes sound gay when you ride 'em.

whine is characteristic of the engine; I guess it's harmonics from the dual cct chains...

I have this: http://www.solomotoparts.com/image.php?productid=27001

it works.

I went with the ZG double bubble and it made a big difference. My head is still in the wind stream, but it's smooth.

At 80 mph and up with the stocker, I felt like the Jack in the Box guy trying to ride through a tornado.

Zero Gravity DOUBLE BUBBLE W/S HONDA VTR1000 98-05 SMOKE

ZG double bubble dark smoke looks better than stock imo. Price listed at link is a rip.

List price is $90. Hunt around you can get new ones for 15 or 20 less.

+1 ZG Double Bubble.
I found that it increased the speed that I felt like I needed to crouch from 75 to about 85 or so.

I have the PUIG dark smoke, double bubble on my SH and it has helped to divert the wind alot on the freeway. Sitting in a normal position at 80mph feels like im tucked. Much better with the DB. Im 5'9".

That's a touring screen. Functional for everything but keeping the weight off your wrists at speed.

I got a Lockhart dark smoke stock replacement, mainly for looks. I'm 5'10 and my commute includes 35 miles of carpool lane on the way home. I want the wind support, it hits a balance at freeway speeds with stock bars.

The Lockhart was under $50 tax included, ordered from my local dealer. They make a double bubble as well.

I've got the Puig on the Superhawk and the ZG on the Interceptor. Like the others have said it straightens the windstream over your helmet as well as lightens the gusts. To feel the effects of a stock screen I have be approaching a 100mph on either machine.

Then the old buffeting starts to come back

then again so does my Mother's voice!

Atleast you didn't do what I did a few weeks ago...

Had nice afternoon riding and took the freeway home (unusual)
When I get home i have several missed calls from my mother and when I'm about to call her back she calls again... Turns out I passed her on the freeway... She was doing the legal limit... I wasn't even Close...

Too funny! That right there, is the best argument to buy a stock cookie cutter bike. "No Momma, that musta' been someone else. You know I always ride 5 miles below the speed limit."
