520 vs 530 chain
I have a few questions about chains.
Stock chain is 102 links and is a 530 with 16 front sprocket and 41 rear?
I need to replace my chain and figure I should probably replace the sprockets as well. I don't know what the difference is between the 520 and 530?
Also I assume if I stay with the stock tooth sprocket the 102 chain is fine? Also do I need a tool to get the old chain off as I will need to find the master link and get it off as well as put on the master link on the new chain. I have never done this before but am very handy with the bike.
Any help would be appreciated.

A 520 chain is narrower and lighter (and weaker too, but should be plenty strong for the VTR). I have been running 520's for years now on the VTR and have had no problems. The only downside is that they don't last quite as long but that is the price to pay for a lighter set-up. The stock chain length will allow you to run up to two extra teeth on the rear should you so choose.

A 520 chain is a smaller pitch chain. Pitch being the distance between rollers. The 520 is a lighter weight chain than the 530. That is why people switch to the 520, but it may not last as long as a 530. If you do go to the 520 you will need to switch sprockets also.
The stock chain does not have a removable master link in it. You will need to cut the chain. If your new chain has a clip style master link you don't real need any special tools to instal it. If you get one with a rivet master link than you need a special tool for that style.

Thanks I think I am going to stick with the 530. Should I replace the sprockets as well even though they seem to be ok. The bike has 11K miles by the way and had been sitting for 18 months. I am in the process of figuring what I should replace and what I can salvage or just clean up. The rotor prices are killing me as I want to replace all 3 but they are so expensive.

This and wheel size are the only two (that I can think of) parts of a motorcycle that use true Imperial dimensions, everything else is Metric. You can feel free to use that one the next time you are out drinking with your buddies. It's sure to impress everyone.
