I never noticed this thread...

I currently have a 1983 CJ-7 that is undergoing a frame off restoration. The frame and body is completely restored and looks brand new off the show room floor! Have a Dana 60's front and rear with 4.88 gears and ARB air lockers. No engine, tranny or t-case as of yet.

Have owned 1 CJ-5, six CJ-7's and two Wranglers. And i have to throw in my 1978 Toyota Land Cruiser!

I have a Jeep question...... When I drive around town, every now and then i hear and feel a "clunk" from under me. seems to happen when downshifting from 2nd to 3rd most often. any ideas? I am going to replace the u joints soon although they seem to be ok for now. tranny mount, motor mount, too much play in the diff.? i'm not sure what it is. I changed the oil in the diff.s recently and all looked well in there... ?????

Help me brainstorm guys.....any help is appreciated.

pretty sure its not the tranny, as it was rebuilt and is still under warranty. I have taken it back to the shop a couple times but they could not reproduce the problem. according to them everything checks out.

My first guess would be the U-joints. I had to replace them on my old Comanche shortly after having the trans rebuild.

I have 2 2000 cherokees. One is sitting on 8"s of lift with 37" swampers. the other is still stock but not for long. I also have a 1975 CJ5 that is totally custom.

I would also say start with the u-joints. Does it do it when you let out the clutch?

agree with the u-joints. My XJ crapped out on the way to work this morning, bad CPS. I think the XJ people may be more obsesive than the Superhawk people. I just wish people would stop suggesting I sell the rig. They just don't understand. I just keep rebuilding both.
