1998 Superhawk - $2,000 OBO
Contact info: John Wallace, email: wallace.johnj at gmail dot com
For sale is my 1998 Honda Superhawk with almost 24,700 miles. Here's the story on the bike: Bike was originally purchased by my dad from a fellow mechanic at Honda House in Richmond, VA who rebuilt the bike after a customer crashed it. My dad owned it for approximately three years before I purchased it from him and I have owned it for nearly three years as well. As long as it's been in the family it's been garaged.
The bike rides great, and tracks true. I have ridden it problem free for nearly 5,000 miles. In no rush to sell, but my garage is getting a little crowded after recently aquiring a new CBR1000RR and my roomate buying a Triumph 675.
Good:
- Metzeler Sportec M3 tires with less than 300 miles
- New chain, front and rear JT steel sprockets with ~100 miles (15,43)
- New front brakes with ~300 miles, rears about half worn
- Mufflers freshly re-packed
- Double bubble wind screen
Bad:
- Rebuilt
- Hairline crack in top, left frame weld. Has always passed inspection and has not grown since owning.
- Top headlight mount is ripped out. Bottom one is fine and headlight/tach assembly stays solid.
- Dent in exhaust piping on right-hand side just before muffler

I bought an '04 VTR that had a crack in the same place. The seller, a member here, never said a word about it. Nonetheless, it was an easy fix for the welder and he made it look stock. Evidently it's not too uncommon.... I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

Location is Glen Allen, VA. And yea, the mechanic who rebuilt the bike never mentioned the crack to my dad and he never noticed it. I wouldn't feel right not disclosing something like that, though, and adjusting the price to reflect it.
Thanks,
John

I just finished removing the tank and fairings to get the bike ready to have the frame repaired. I snapped a few pics while I was at it, documenting any imperfections I saw. I'll provide an update once the crack is repaired. Follow the link below to my Photobucket.com album.

i really appreciate the fact that you are disclosing the crack issue. good for you. is the title a rebuild or salvage?
so now you're getting the frame rewelded? good idea. are you getting the top fairing stay mount(boss) rewelded too?
new elbow for that pipe, should be an easy fix.
plastics look good. mileage is pretty low.
price is right. good deal.
good luck selling the bike. i hope you enjoy your cbr christmas present!!!

As far as I know the title is clear as the customer brought the bike in for repair and the mechanic bought the bike from him, repaired it and then sold it to my dad. I'm not sure if insurance was even involved, but I have the title in my name with no salvage or repair branding.
I'm going to ask the welder about the fairing stay and see what he thinks. It's still very solid with just the bottom stay for support. If he says it won't be too difficult then I'll have it welded too.

Good move on your part. I sent pics to my welder...he said no problem, easy fix and easy to verify a good repair. He uses some kind of x-ray equipment to examine jobs like that. I'm sure you can find a fabricator in your area thats been welding critical stuff longer than most of us have been riding. Keep us updated.
