voltage regulator problem?

hey all got a question for you.My battery died today and had to jump it to get home. Now the battery is old and needed replacing but when I took the seat off the sub frame close to where the regulator mounts was burning hot to the touch. Is this normaL?I don't ever recall it being that hot.also,How do I test the regulator to see if that is the problem or if the battery is causing something to go wrong in the reg. Thanks for your help.

The regulator gets HOT: thus the problem with them dying early and the popular mod of swapping to a GSXR or R6/R1 regulator. The way to test is to put a volt meter on the battery and run the bike checking the voltage at idle, 5500 rpm, and off.. It should be around 14 volts when charging, and 12 volts when off. (with some variance but not a lot)

Any 5 wire R/R works:

in the KB is a link to an article on swapping: https://www.superhawkforum.com/forum...ad.php?t=14380
